The Desert Rat lives!
Thanks for the emails and PMs asking if we are OK. No problems except that damned Photobucket problem. Still won't capture my pictures for uploading. That pisses me off in spades. I will continue to try to get them going, but if not I will just backfill them after the ride is over. Don't worry, we have plenty of nice shots the whole way.
Couldn't post since we left Point Reyes about 40 hours ago. The fog rolling around the coast and point was something else. I'm glad I had the leather riding pants instead of jeans. Warm and comfortable no matter what. We got the SPOT to send off in the middle of the Golden Gate.
(I should probably check that before I post- oh well.) Thanks again to Dennis (Ivan Rider) who gave us perfect directions past the Golden Gate bridge. We enjoyed the coast but I screwed up and followed the signs to SkyLine via Rt 35. That had me miss the coast to Half Moon Bay. Eh, it worked anyway. Rode down and had lunch at Alice's. Great food as usual.
Continued on and had a fellow rider pull up behind me at a light. He was on a new 750GSXR and had a GoPro on his helmet. I couldn't believe that he didn't pass me as we blasted through the twisties to Santa Cruz. When we got to a light I asked if he was filming. HE WAS!! We pulled over and I gave him the contact info for this thread. He said he would post some of it here. I wish I had the brain capacity to remember his name. You couldn't ask for a friendlier stranger.
If he posts here you'll see that these Urals are some tough SOBs to haul all this shit and still move along.
I swear this thing gets better everyday. NO issues at all. When we changed the oils at Dennis & Becky's place the old stuff looked fine. 3320 kilometers on it and no squeaks, leaks, or anything that even needed tightening. I bet if BMW had bought the factory and did the same upgrades that have been done over the last 10 years they would charge twice as much. This has been as good as any of the Japanese machines I've owned.
Back to the ride. Did the quick and ugly ride around the coast to Monterey and stopped at Walmart so I could get provisions to do the one real thing on my bucket list, then on to Big Sur Lodge. My "one thing" was to sleep between the huge redwoods in a small tent. I've stayed there at the cabins, motel rooms, and rented RVs. Never in a tent. Just like the rest of the ride, Julie happily went along. I did spring for the air mattress with battery inflator. (Yes, even MORE shit piled onto the bike!) Now I'm using the space inside of the two extra tires to hold my new sleeping bag, tent, and coleman fuel.
Woke up this morning looking up at my favorite trees on earth. Loaded up and rode down to Gorda on a fantastic morning. On the way back north from Gorda we stopped at Julia Pfieffer falls, Big Sur beach, Andrew Molera, Point Lobos, and one or two others.
We had gotten such an early start that we decided to use the route that JCW on Pasnit.com gave us and headed for Yosemite. What a great route! These freakin' California cattle live in some of the most beautiful places. I thought that the twisties would be hard on three wheels, but they are a blast. Julie seems to have enough confidence in me that she always seems to be smiling.
Well, we made it to within 20 or so miles of Yosemite tonight. Tomorrow we will get the cold weather stuff out and see what we can see there, then head south a bit.
Thanks for riding along,
Tom

Thanks again for the great lettering Patrick. I've already had three people ask me if this was the Desert Rat model.

I plowed through a maze with Photobucket and captured a few pictures. Not nearly as easy as before. I hope I can remember how in the hell I did it so I can do more in the morning.
Here's a cool place on 1 a bit north of Bodega Bay.

Here are some pictures from Goat Rock beach just north of Bodega Bay. The pictures of the wrecked crane (I think) are mostly for the benefit of my brother Panzir (Knecht!) who likes old, abandonded machinery.

Upside down for easier reading.

Our new friends in Bodega Bay. Dennis and Becky were great hosts to a couple they had never met. I wish I had taken more pictures but we were busy swapping tires, changing oils, eating and talking. THANK YOU two for being part of this trip. If the timing was a little later we would have loved to take you up on the offer of the cabin. The same offer applies to you if you ever get to central NY. Same deal, no indoor plumbing in the guest cabin. The waterfront views out our window only go across a pond though.

Tell me that their custom pick up Ural isn't the coolest thing. It even has a rumble seat.

Beautiful Point Reyes.
Yes, we know that the camera still has a spot on it. We will keep our eyes open for a place to buy a new one.

We all know where this is:

Lunch at Alice's!

More down the coast:

Setting up for the thing on my bucket list:

I thought that I'd add this here.
This song ran through my head often during the trip. Julie could tell when my right leg started moving in a beat. To view our pictures while listening, you can click on it and minimize it for the main song in my trip's soundtrack. Hope you like it too.

Down the coast:

Take a close look at this picture. Those tiny dots on the flat slope are huge bulldozers! I can't imagine that job.

Thanks for providing the link.....

Thanks a bunch for provding the link. This ride report is so great that I had to join this forum today......just to be sure I don't miss a lick on this journey.

Really curious to learn where you're spending the night tonight. Wasn't very hospitable of me to not offer our guest room. We're only half hour from Hwy. 49 and Hwy. 88, if you ended up going that way over to 395.

But then again.......had I offered you one of our guest rooms, you'd of had to park that Ural next to a couple of Harleys.....only have a three car garage.
