Yup.i`ll bet.......but that would cut into my drinkin money, and that isn`t gonna happen,,,,,,,an XR650L is no race bike,,porting and high compression is fairly cheap and adds power,,,,,cool rods are unnecessarily expensive and since my last rod was still in spec at 24k.......i expect this will last that long or longer if still have the bike

Friday night,,ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh time for some quality time with a beer can...

Be right back,,gotta lug some bike parts into the garage,,,i gotta get a beer fridge in the garage,,that would cut down on unnecessary walking wouldn`t it

My garage refrigerator is a bucket full of beer, topped with ice and water. Ice cold beer in a couple of minutes. Easy clean up. I have to do this due to no room for a beer fridge. Ya know all available space is taken up by Honda parts.

5/16 drill fits right in.........so if you use a 3/8 NC plug all you need to do is tap the hole 3/8 NC and screw the plugs in since 3/8NC calls for a 5/16 hole...

The Fifth gear is even supposed to be better,,which i`m doing now,,it gives the bike a higher/taller fifth gear so i can run lower gearing on the chain drive and still have the same top speed

So i drug the bike and beer out to the garage

Then i went to lug stuff up from the basement........here`s some more stuff i found in boxes that arrived last week..

I like riding these tires in the summer after the trails dry up,,they are scary in mud,but on rocks and most trails and running across rivers they grip great ,,on river crossings with wet rock i really like them,,they are fairly soft...some people like em,,some hate em..

manditory CW bling..

Now..........i bought this off ebay...

This bike had only a few hundred miles or so on it

Basically new

I mean there is NO wear........at all...even the slider is new..

So is this....

NOW...............the reason i bid on this was because of this...

Yup....rustedv to crap.........what happened here is the bolt that holds the bone to the frame came loose........so i needed 2 needle bearings and the sleeve.and also the end sealing washers were now bad..........

So i looked the old swingarm over...........and found the swingarm chain slider that wraps arround the front of the swing arm was worn out....

The slider that goes near the sprocket was nearly beat....

And all those parts were going to cost more than the 100 bucks i paid for a complete new swingarm that came with all new sliders,,,all completely new linkage, and all new bolts including the swingarm bolt too...

So i pressed the bearings out of the new stock link and put them in my lowering link..

And in the end have a shiny new swingarm for basically free considering i`d pay more for the individual parts from honda...

So i cleaned the shock up really good,,turned out nice i thought...

And then a friend came over with a generator that wouldn`t run....

And since he couldn`t even change a spark plug in it...i had to completely tear this down and rebuild the carb in it....runs great now,,but took a few hours and that`s it for tonight,,maybe i`ll have time tomorrow to do more drinkin,,i mean wrenching..

So........the reason for the stall on the rebuild.........

I was gapping the rings,,got the top ring perfect at 22 thou........then started to gap the second ring...i noticed after a little grinding that something didn`t look right yup........i pulled a rookie mistake i had 2 feeler guages stuck together and over gapped the second ring

So i was just a little pissed off.........and went upstairs and had a beer,or three..

Then ordered a set of rings

NOW......the funny part,,well not really but kinda

The rings arrived 9 days later and were WRONG.FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

So after some investigation i found out that the piston was a 11.25-1 JE instead of the 10.5-1 i asked CW to get

NOW........CW cc`ed the dome,,plus the thickness of the head gasket and the fact the slug sits about 40 thou from the top...that equals a true 10.5-1..........

So if you buy a 10.5-1 JE slug......don`t expect 10.5-1......it`ll actually be lower.....

So it wasn`t CW`s fault i ordered the wrong rings...it was mine for not looking at the actual box,,i thought 10.5-1 and ordered a set accordingly....

Now off i go setting the gaps...

I set the gap on the top ring to 20 thou...

I set the end gap on the second ring to 22 thou..

I then cleaned up the ends with my stone to remove burrs..

I installed the rings on the piston and clocked them with this stagger..

JE uses the same ring stagger i`ve always used,,it`s pretty much a standard..

I then poped it into the hole

The piston in these bikes is huge...

On goes the head,,torqued it down...26ft/lbs

NOW.........as promised.........a different way to install the cam chain tensioner

Move the left chain rail to the right as far as it will go..with the chain in..

Put the spring on the tensioner and put it in......push the retaining pin in and leave the allen head bolt that locks it out,,do not put that bolt in till last....

Now..get a 1/8 inch pin punch.........tap it into the hole, usually it pops right in...

Now.......take the long valve cover bolt with the 10mm head and put it in it`s hole,,do not tighten it....and while pushing the pin punch towards that bolt..........wire it up like this...

You can drop the cam in with the gear with no problem at all this way,,and no f`in arround with zip ties........

After you get the cam in and timed proper,,,remove the wire and the tensioner is released,,,,,,,then rotate the retaining pin with pliers on the outside of the head till you can install the allen bolt inside the head that locks it in place.....done like dinner..
