Last week it was Daimler-Benz group. VW has had an eye on Ducati since it was sold last time.

There's a thread on this here where this will be merged.

I've read that Hero has been in discussions with Ducati, how about a Indian company producing Ducati???
In the past the Italian government has gone to great lenghts to keep their motorcycle producers under their flag.
Now in these tough economic times in the EU, especially in Italy, they may not be able to do so this time around.

Regards, Paul

And you forgot to mention that all this is basically owned by Porsche.

So, quite some sporty background there.

Actually VW owns Porsche.
Porsche was going to try and buy VW but the scheme backfired!

From Wikipedia (not certain how accurate that is, but I guess pretty accurate):

"As of September 2011, 50.73% of the voting rights in Volkswagen AG were held by Porsche Automobil Holding SE, which is also the parent company of Porsche AG.[9]"

Source:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Group

Update: some more info from the "other side":

"Porsche SE is headquartered in Zuffenhausen, a city district of Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg and is owned by the Piëch and Porsche families, and Qatar Holdings, through the Qatar Investment Authority (10%).[4] It owns 50.7% of Volkswagen AG and 50.1% of Porsche Zwischenholding GmbH, which owns 100% of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, the manufacturer of a range of sports cars and SUVs."

cug screwed with this post 03-12-2012 at 12:20 PM Reason: Adding Porsche Info

Don't believe the Wilkipedia-lies...VW owns Porsche and not the other way around.
That is why the former Porsche chairman was escorted out of the door after his deal to take over VW fell through...
Anyways who cares anyways?
As for Ducati beeing for sale with all those new products being out maybe they anticipate expensive warranty claim when those 195hp Panigale twins blow up during the warranty period...
I mean 97hp from a 600cc single that doesn't sound like it will last for a long period...
Even KTM gets only 69 hp from a 690cc single.
As for VW/Audi taking over Ducati, they are not stupid and already have their stakes in Suzuki which did not turn out well.
AMG/Ducati at least would have the same customer base;rich posers trying too look sporty...
I don't think H-D will buy Ducati, either. They don't like sport-bikes and don't want to alienate their fat cruiser riding fanbase who dress up like pirates and play billy bad ass...
They might be not able to afford the Dainese outfit to fit the ricky racer image, looking at the prices at the tatto parlor lately...
My bet is on the chinese with their huge still untapped market.
Chinese are total image-whores even if they havn't figured out yet that it has been a long time sime Buicks were considered being cool...

If Volswagen ends up buying Ducati at least there will be a bunch of entusiast running the show and not a bunch of beancounters trying to make a buck...
Maybe they will get get them more reliable too and bring a true Ducati Sports-tourer to replace the ST2,3,4 line as pragmatic and practical minded as the germans are...
That would be a win-win situation to get Ducati more into the mainstream away from being a image or boutique brand...
Because they do sound good and I like twins...

So, correct them if they are lies. I rather believe (the "self-correcting") Wikipedia than a single person here. All sources I can find show that the Porsche SE holds 50.7% on Volkswagen.

You know, there is a reason why companies never work the way some "Stammtisch" propaganda thinks is best ...
