So, Bigdavegs= BMW guy. fine go and ride your beemer.

I will ride my 950 all day, refill as needed and have fun. I have no issue with the egos of the bike, and like it alot better then any BMW I rode. No problems with riding off rode and hav been called loopy for doing it.

I am 5'10" 285lbs and like sunsets in the hills with the sheep.

Very few bikes I've owned had a stock seat worth a sh%t. A new saddle/ saddles are usually the first things I swap out. I can ride my newer gel seat on my Adventure endlessly. But then again... I'm used to stock Honda seats of the older vintage ( pre sharp edged).

Regarding the spy photos... looks like KTM is going for the kill on the BMW GS12 and Yam S10 marketshare. I'm sure it will excel, though it's not really where I'm looking to evolve from my 950 Adventure when that time comes.

But I'd be best served riding the life out of my "Big Heavy" to at least get my money's worth from all the freakin farkling.

I wondered the same thing. I loved my 990. But it didn't fit in with the riding i do. I did a little dirt roading with it. I was completely comfortable at 75 mph on a dirt road, and I loved riding it on the paved twisties. If my wife hadn't started riding with me (after 30 years) I would probably still have the 990. The last time we took it out, we were on the road, (mostly curves) for 9 hours. She was nearly in tears when we got home. I road very little dirt with my 990. I would ride my 525 when i wanted to get dirty.

I did trade my 990 for a Goldwing.
Did it for my wife.

But I like the wing way more than I ever thought I would. A few years ago i couldn't imagine myself ever riding a Goldwing.

I enjoy the backroads on my wing. Cupholders, backrest and a radio is actually pretty nice . I have went as much as 260 miles on a tank on the wing.

I hear the goldwing is a nice bike, too much plastic for me.

No offense but people criticizing a 100hp Dakar bike for not having enough wind protection, not being short enough, and having an uncomfortable seat makes me giggle.

Speaking of hard to work on. It takes 2 hours to change the air filter on a goldwing................. But only 5 minutes to change the oil.


I HATE to throw any criticism at the 990. I put less than 10,000 miles on mine before I traded it. I am not the least bit sorry that I bought it. BUT, I have a 29" inseam. I hacked up 3 or 4 windshields and finally got something I could live with. I could live with the seat alone. But not 2 up. I love having too much HP. But I like smooth off idle grunt.

Choices have to be made. I have 2 525 KTMs, an XR650L and the Goldwing. But I still look longingly at every 990 and SE that I see.

Sales manager from my local dealer told me that he was at a product meeting talking with the rep from Austria. He asked the guy why they didn't make their seats a little softer. Steve said that the Austrian rep got redfaced and was yelling "DAMNIT, IT'S A DIRTBIKE, YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO SIT DOWN".


Austria obviously doesn't have anything like the TAT.

Got a buddy that has a wing, great bike, very smooth, lots of power (he's got some sort of chip on it). I'm just not ready to move to a wing yet, but I have nothing but praise for a machine that's been around for more than 30 years and still nothing can touch it for what it was intended to do. I've also seen the video of the guy riding the Dragon on a wing. All I can say is, WOW ! ! ! That's a whole lot of bike to throw around like he does.

Have to agree...still stick dirt in ya face old man. But the Gold Wing is a superb machine, a classic and will be remembered as so. The handling is the biggest surprise, motor smooth as silk and distance travelling is a joy.
