Suspension for your hack?

Just getting started building my own hack here and I've been lurking around the site a while gleaning some knowledge. Wondering if anyone who has built their own would be willing to share what they used for a shock? I had been planning on using a shock from an old ninja 250 I have in the spare parts bin. They are notoriously bouncy for a bike, but I'm wondering if it still might be too stiff for a hack. Anyone have any tips for other options? Gocart shocks, something like that maybe?

I have thanks, and at one point I was planning on using the rubber shock setup you had used until I saw the issues you ran into.

I should also mention this is going to be a strictly on-road rig, no offroading at all.

The shock I used was from the rear of some china made 4 wheeler.

I have twin shocks on the car now,and when my wife is in it OR I'm hauling stuff it works great.But when it's empty it's tooooo stiff.I'm going to make it so I can remove the top nut of the shock easily and lay it forward to a bracket so I can just run 1 shock most of the time.

Ah! quads were something I hadn't thought of. I'll have to look into that. I'm building a leaner, so it will be a lightweight rig to start with.

On my first leaner I used a cheap shock of unknowen make... I found getting
the right shock strength & ride height between loaded & unloaded was a prob..was always adjusting
the preload rings... I found in the end the rig worked better with a bit of weight in it...
That releaved the prob somewhat...

I'm building another leaner at the moment... both mine are off road units..

So, pre load the car....? Then keep it this way until you have weight w/ a heart beat.

Very good looking builds there. I'm always keen to see what other people come up with for subframes, like you said, thats where the trick is.

One thing you said in your build made me think; you said the whole rig weighs under 80lbs. I pretty much heaved all my weight on this ninja 250 shock I have and didn't budge it. Granted only I'm not the most robust fellow at just 150lbs, but still; the reason I'm building this rig is for the kids to begin with.

I think I'll start keeping my eyes peeled for atv shocks.

As I will never carry people I didn't bother with suspension on the chair.

I used a shock from a 1980 yamaha beluga scooter it's a mono shock with 350 lbs capacity had no problem with 2 up 500 LBS but looked real funny from behind should have had the camera for FHVideo's.
