Wild & Scenic Sober Selway - A Gathering

September 13-16, 2012

Selway River O'Hara Campground (A larger group campground nearby has also been reserved)
Near Lowell, Idaho.

Cost: TBD (around $30)

This gathering was prompted by a bunch of folks that participate in MNWilly Stay Sober Thread.

Those of us that don't drink attend other ADV events, and all are welcome to come hang out with us sober riders.
We only ask that for this weekend, please no drugs or alcohol.
If a weekend without a drink is a problem.....then it may be a problem.

There's great riding in the area and three planned meals for the weekend.
I'm hoping to have a couple meals that showcase Idaho's wildlife.
The plan is for Salmon on Friday followed by elk and beef steaks on Saturday night.
And a big breakfast before Everybody departs on Sunday.

It's a remote part of Idaho. Camping this time of year is ideal. No skeeters, mild temps, passes are free from snow.
This weekend last year, the coldest at night was 50 and never warmer than 80.

Three pristine trout rivers meet here. The Lochsa, Clearwater and Selway.

There's a restaurant (Wilderness Cafe) with good food at the entrance. Another close to Lolo pass (Lochsa Lodge)
There's a small, clean motel also at the entrance. (about 2 miles from the camping sight) Also, a resort area with cabins (a bit pricey at $135 p/night)

There's gas at the entrance. A convenience store with a good supply of ice cream.
There will be room for RV's at an additional cost. But no hookups or electric

The camping areas are the best part. Beautiful! There's enough to host any size group. There's a large group camping sight or small riverside areas and anything in between.
Camping areas were open and the entire place had very few campers this time of year. Kids are back in school and hunting season hasn't started.

Most of the campers were fly fisherman. Catch and release rainbow trout were providing fun for those folks.

Riding is great all around the area. There's plenty of great twisty pavement and lots of easy, scenic dirt routes.
Most camping areas are located on pavement. A few have just a small stretch of dirt.

There's a group of about 20 sober campers that have there own camp sight every year. Camp fire meetings every evening at 7pm. Depending on attendance and preference, we may have recovery type campfire meetings.

This is a wilderness area. There isn't cell service or wifi.
There will be a local motel room rented for showers and wifi will be available at that location.

More details to follow. Mark your calendars!

Photos from last year:

Easy dirt road follows the Selway about 10 miles from camping areas.

Some of the smaller camping areas string together along the river

Selway Falls is near the end of the 10 mile gravel ride

Further back, a few bridge crossings lead into the mountains

The roads up are big trailie and two up freindly.

Fire crews where the only others I came across. It was a little smokey since they were burning big fire breaks.

Getting near the top

At the look out

Back down

Entering or exiting on Hwy 12. 50 miles in either direction - It never gets boring.

Very cool Greg, how close to the date do you need to have a firm commitment? It's too far out for me to know what my life entails at that point but if I can, I'd sure like to attend this.

It'd be good to see you, Ray. This place would work great for your WR or GS. Both mine will be there.
Hope you can make it.

I'd like to get a head count as soon as possible. I'd prefer to over estimate than under. Once I start taking paypal, I'll have and official cut-off on Sept. 1. That said, anyone who shows up is welcome.

I would like to be there, but this will be after I already spent 8 or 9 weeks living in a tent off the little bike. We'll see. Are you going to make Hells Canyon this year?
