TAT drz400 gearing?

i recently purchased a drz400 for use on the tat this summer. it came with 14/47 gearing which seems low. i was wondering what everyone else has used for the tat on there drz/klx bikes for this trip. i was thinking of 14/44 of maybe 15/47. i'd like to figure this out so i can locktite the front sprocket. thanks for the help

14/44

Last september I used 14/44 for the western tat. 14/44 seemed good all around from black dragon wash to the occasional hwy segment. I never used the loctite. I guess I was one of the lucky ones.

I've tryed several gearing setup's and like a 15/47 combo. I don't there is anything on the TAT that this will be to high geared for and it will work well on the flat open sections or slab. When are you hitting the trail? I was planning starting in NM but my brother can't make it, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I have 2 DRZ400 set up and ready to go just for this trip.

Cheers,
Rick

15-44 is fine for 90% of the TAT, but that's based on riding it dry. I weighed 165lbs and found it perfect. Take a 13T CS if you think you might want some real power. I did Black Dragon with the 15-44 and while I did have to work the clutch a little bit it wasn't enough to be concerned about.

with the 15-44 the bike will be in it's sweet spot at a true 62mph (not indicated). i.e. the least amount of engine vibes.

Me and two friends who are brothers are hitting the trail july 23, right in the hot season, planning to do the whole thing. today i orders a 14 and a 44, i think this set up will work well for me. i plan to locktite the front sprocket so changing it out to suit terrain isn't an option and i won't be taking along a extra rear as is to heavy and bulky. i might take a 16 along if i do decide to come back home and have to slab it.

a 16 may not fit, as some people report on having to remove metal. Like I said the 15-44 is adequate for highway.
