Sri Lanka - anyone ridden there?

Anyone done a ride through Sri Lanka? Off road potential? Easy to find your way around? Me and a couple of mates are planning an overseas trip again and after lots of thinking about destinations, Sri Lanka is now top of the list. It has interesting history and beautiful countryside, easy to get to from Oz and trail bike rental is dirt cheap... can any one offer us any wisdom? We are looking at late august or early september.
Cheers

anyone ridden there?

Yes,
but its twenty years ago.
The landscape is beautiful, the flora is like Queensland in my mind.
The people are very poor but very kindly.
In former times i was recomended to ride not too far north of the iland because there lived or lives
a tribe caled Tamiles.
People told me that these Tamiles are very nasty to strangers.
I cannot say if the political situation changed theese days.
Another thing i can remember is, that the name of places are written in Indian Language.
For non-Indians the characters are not to read or to interpret. Its like to read chinese Language.
That does not work expect you was born there.
That means if you have no GPS you have no Orientation, except you stay at the cost.
You will know that from Australa.
See you on the road.
Ing.

Yeah, went last year, will PM you a ride report I wrote last year for the club I ride with and you can hit me up with some questions which I will attempt to answer for you.

Would suggest you need to check the weather outlook at the time of year as the monsoons are a bit of a bastard!

Cheers, badmanners.

Hi Rhino

6 of us went there last year in July
for 3 weeks
we hired 250's from yellow bike rentals
for about 18 euro per day
they are in negambo just north of columbo

we rode all over the place
but didnt come across as many dirt rds as we expected

good time of year not to hot
the waters on the northeast were calmer than the southwest from memory due to
the monsoonal seasons

Yeah me and a buddy did the lap from negambo to sigrya rock then down the middle, and looped back up the coast through to columbo on the way back home. We went about this time last year Bikes were ~20 AUD a day, it wasn't from yellow but another guy on the main drag. Haggle hard. Then haggle harder!

It was all pretty much sealed road, easy to get around, people friendly, everything pretty cheap. Now all the Tamil rebels are gone the north should be easy to explore, but your experience may differ.
Kandi was nice, (saw a game for the Cricket world cup!) I'll link my facebook pics/maps etc to you if you like. (was something like this... http://maps.google.com.au/maps?saddr...=5,6,8&t=m&z=9)

If your looking for a destination, and want to ride on some dirt goto the Philippines. The loop through North Luzon alone is amazing! then you can head south and is;and hop to your hearts content. Check my ride report below ;)

TLDR; Goto the Philippines instead.
