Testriding F800GS to see if I want the F650GS

I have been reading on here and every other site out there, but now my head hurts

I wont be able to test ride the F650GS, but I can test ride the F800GS. How will this transpire to the 650? Will I get a good idea of the 650 testing the 800? Or are they too different?

650GS is quite a bit lower. Less power in high revs also.

I think your choice would depend on your riding interest. If most of what you do is paved with the odd dirt road or light trail the 650 is fine. If you spend more time off road get the 800. I rode both and for my use chose the 650. Performance below 5,000 rpm is for practical purposes the same and above 5K both are buzzy but the 800 pulls harder. I wouldn't let the small HP difference influence you decision. GH

I chose the 800 but I really liked the 650. 650 is more street oriented. The F800 is also super tall, so your height might be a factor.

It comes down to style

For all practical purposes, they are the same bike. Yeah, the F800 has a hair more power over 5K RPM, and the F650 has a 19" front wheel vs. the 21" on the F800, single front brake rotor vs. twin, blah, blah, blah...

If you notice any of these things while riding, well then, pick the one that suits you.

I don't notice them, and the F800 gave me a woodie, but the F650 didn't, so it was an easy choice for me. YM, as they say, MV.

Cool2 Which one...

Which one fits you...your riding style...your checkbook? I have ridden the 1200, 800, 650 twin & 650 thumper. We purchased a 2012 F650GS twin and a 2007 F650GS thumper. They both fit my wife, sons, daughter and myself. My sons and I could ride the 800, but have too much fun ob the 650's. If my wife takes the 650 twin over, I might get a 1200 for BIG rides; but I might get another 650 twin. Good luck & happy riding!

I love my F650GS..... i mean i absolutly love this friggen bike.... i call her my sweet Red Haired Princess! and she has done me well... i've been dual sporting in the Colorado Mountains with her with a group of F800s and i've ridden her on the Arkansas 500 and kept up and held my own with all the dirt bikes...

I have toured a bunch on her... (even crossed the panhandle of Oklahoma at 120 miles an hour....

she is a great bike...

But i'm a shrimpy guy at 5'5"... and she fits me... with the low seat... I can tipy toe ... if i was taller i would get an F800...

That being said... i'm doing the Utah Back Country Discovery Route this September and the Continental Divide Route in 2013....

It has more to do with you then the bike...

A lot of folks talk... i recommend riding instead... and if you want to tour the world on asphalt, go for it... if you want a dirt bike... don't get the either one... you want a really good dual sport... you cant go wrong with either one...

Let us know what you decide and remember it didn't happen if don't take pictures...so lets see um...

The F800GS test ride was awesome, took me 2 minutes to know that this was the kind of bike for me, due to price it will be the F650GS, but from reading all your opinions it seems to me that they are very similar bikes and I probably won't be left wanting. I am waiting on the dealer to let me know delevery times, as the F650GS they have in the shop is pre-setup with stuff I really don't need or want (like tire pressure gauge thingy, why would I want to pay for that????)

I also test rode the 2012 DL650, and it was bland in comparison. Took me an hour to think it was an ok bike, the F800GS 2 minutes to think this is great bike! Amazing.

I guess you mean the tire pressure monitor. I ordered it installed on my bike. Being able to glance down at the dash and know my tires are aired up while flying down the highway is worth the expense to me. GH

I bought the 650 but if I were to have my time back I would have gotten the 800. At the time I was concerned about height, as I am only 5'7" and had not owned a bike for 11 years. In saying this, I still quite enjoy the 650 and have done some really great off road riding with it. Both are really great machines - I just wish I had bought the 800.

Mainly for ground clearance. I bottomed out last summer quite a bit in one day and wrecked the OEM bash plate.. If you plan on doing alot of off road maybe something to consider, if not the 650 will be fine. It's just I do more off road than I initially thought I would, and after sitting on a few 800's I think I would have been fine with the height.

Yup. i went into the dealer knowing i was going to buy the 650, and then i walked out with a 800. its a fantastic bike.

If you put on the 800 shield from the cockpit they will look very close.
If you ride the 650 for a couple of years and then decide that more off pavement is your thing, a longer shock and longer fork tubes can give you that extra ground clearance on the 650.
You can add height to your liking and take it all the way up to 800 height or anywhere in between.
But... the low seat height makes it very easy to ride off pavement too (slides well!).
Could be cheaper than trading in the 650 (for the 800) if thats what you may be thinking.
The bottom half of the 658 is sweet torquey power.
The older I get the less I rev out my bikes, regardless of bike.
A bike that 'pulls out of the basement' is fun.

I like my 658. It is not the end-all in bikes.

Horsepower is a distant second to useable torque, unless cafe cruising is the reason for the purchase...
