A Couple Thoughts

Hey Magnetic South. I think I was too hard on you originally. I applaud the creativity, and lord knows I'm the last guy that could be called practical. I guess what I was feeling was to have some idea what you're setting out to do before you invest too heavily. And don't sacrifice function when going south you need all you can get. And while I called the XR a "dirt bike" yes, I was corrected, it is in fact a 'dual sport' (a street bike with notably dirt bike characteristics). I know, I have an XR and a CRF.

As for the long head cover bolt that stripped (common), you might consider just getting some 6mm thread stock (McFadden Dale Hardware) that will allow you to reach deeper into the head where the threads are still good. Typically the covers leak because of that stripped bolt.

As for a place to work, you might go visit the guy at LA Cycle Salvage. He's a nice old guy. See if he can take you under his wing for a few days. I'd help, but I'm in OC, although I'm working 5th & Flower in LA the next couple days.

Good luck.

I'll be watching this one. Way to just go for it; I think that's the best way to get skills. Hope you find a spot to work on the bike. Keep it up

Hey mr. south

really sucks about the garage spot you got there, can't you sort of hide down there ?? and just work on!
If I would live there you would definitely have a spot to work on your bike.

The tread coming out is almost normal on the older honda xl/xr heads 2 days ago I did one of my old XL600LM, just replaced all. get some strong heat resistant loctite on the helicoils before you put them in. they normaly don't come out but lots of times they go deeper and then you will have the same problem all over again next time you open the damned thing.

well I hope some nice LA peoples will help you with a spot for the next week so you can get the bike sorted !!
don't forget the little bit! of sealant on the top cover ;)

Pic's are up and good now. Looking forward to the rest of the build. Always liked the big bore single cafe racer. I had an SR500 years ago that I cafed out when cafe wasn't as "in" as it is now.

maybe try a mini storage unit? they are cheap, $25-$40 a month depending on size, and they don't need to know that you will be out of there in a week...

Inspiring!

Awesome thread man, very inspiring! I can hardly get my act together to fix anything but the essentials and I've got a full size garage to work in... I'f I were in Cali I'd lend you a space in an instant! Good luck and cant wait to see the end result. Be sure post some updates once the ride begins, or at least when you arrive somewhere

Perth is probably a bit far away for shed space but there's some here - hope you find some a bit closer! Love the report.
