Some Friends just stopped by for an overnight from London with their Dog "John". [Going to Belize for now after paddling the Amazon for 4 months by themselves in a folding canoe!].They drive a 'Lada". Constant 4x4, 4 cylinder, low gear also. 3 years old that thing with 30,000 miles goes everywhere as you can see in the video.
In this day and age of the "Chrome Hummer " syndrome [Search "SEMA" happening right now] they were a breath of fresh air! That car was humming!!!
We figured we can put a 15 inch tube on a 16 inch wheel, and we did!
Enjoy... Ara and Spirit

Five reasons you should not buy a Ural

MSRP: $13,949
Recommended max speed: 62 mph
Rated HP @ 5600 RPM: 40
Recommended Fuel: 91 Octane Unleaded
Miles per Gallon: 26-33 mpg

Only reason to buy: I'm only guessing, but they look like fun

I think the rated HP is 42? Don't be shorting us foilheads big numbers like that, it cuts down on our bragging rights to scooter riders!!

Damn!! But wait a minute, I run synthetic oil, aftermarket muffs and a re-jet with a non-stock air box, each one of those things is supposed to increase HP by 10%, so a 30% increase on 40hp is, uh, what 12hp? Holy crap, I'm sportin 52hp in my mind, heheh Man wouldn't it be nice if all them b.s. 10 percents did add up like that, oh well........

Do these bikes have a weak electrical system? Could a GM alt be retrofitted?
I have one on my Suzuki Samurai, the original 36 amp went out and they are about $160.

The 80 amp GM was $10 at a salvage yard, easy hook up.
I'm guessing in this application it is gear or chain driven, by it looks like there is room for it.
The latest generation of Ural 12v alternators is probably the same as the one from your Suzuki Samurai. It's a Nippon Denso and together with its adapter, it costs about $600.
A lot of people still run the 35Amp grenade with no problem. Others have had the weak shafts break and the cog fall into the gear tower within a few thousand miles.
The first generation alternator was a low output one, but relatively hassle free.

Just goes to show that folks who ride 3 wheelers are just as asymmetric as their rigs.
I agree with Windmill, Plan-of-Man, and several others. So what if this thread is long? If you don't like it, stay out of the sandbox. There's about 50,000 other threads on Adv Rider. Go ride your Harley to the corner pub or harass the guys on a Beemer forum or something, just stop being the one A-hole kid that gets PO'd and tries to spoil all the other kids' fun by running off with the ball because nobody wants to play with him.

I don't know about the others, but now that biggziff owns an Ural, he's mellowed some. Probably due to the Ural's amazing restorative properties (smile restoring anyways). If I keep getting all this overtime at my jobs, I'll own one sooner, rather than later. and that's something I will drink to.

Unlike gspell68, I thought you were pretty cranky after your first post.
But since you say you are serious about getting one, are we talking new or used?
This one just a couple of hours north of you only has 5,000 klicks on it. Merrill is fanatic about taking care of his stuff... http://sovietsteeds.com/forums/viewt...hp?f=4&t=24669
$7k is a fair price for an almost new bike. I've been thinking new myself, but if somebody don't snap this up it's going to be hard for me to resist the temptation, even though it's a thousand miles for me.

An 07 Patrol for 7grand is a good deal. That year has the better gears in the trans and being a 750, it is highway capable. At half of the cost of new with only 3000 miles, that is the way to go.

Rather than finance through a dealer for a new rig, check with a credit union for rates. They may just win your business with great rates and good service.

Always a way to make the dream happen.

That makes it an even better situation. A cheap flight up and a beautiful ride back down the coast. Bring a monkey because the car will be on the right side for epic views of the ocean.
