Question Help, please. Stray Circlip.

I washed the bike the other day. After moving the bike I found a Circlip on the ground on the rider's right side from the counter sprocket forward . I can't see where it goes. I'm not 100% sure it is a even part for the bike but have a feeling it is .

I searched the fiche and found just one such circlip, item 5: http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fic...6&rnd=03252011 (11_3997 - ENGINE HOUSING COVER, LEFT) but it is an internal piece and the release lever (item 8) has never been removed from the bike.

McMaster-Carr calls the circlip a "metric side-mount external retaining ring (E-Style)": http://www.mcmaster.com/#retaining-rings/=hre0t4 The one I have in hand measures 12mm outside diameter (A), 6mm inside ear to ear and is approximately .5mm thick. The clip is non-magnetic. A magnet won't pick it up so it is not made of steel. It is a dull grey color.

Any ideas out there?

Desperate and much obliged!

The repair manual lists a few, but they're all internal as far as I can tell. If a magnet won't pick it up, it's probably stainless. Which doesn't help much, of course.

Check your instrument cluster? There should be 3 of them on the posts holding it on. Wild guess but they look close to that, and I haven't had very much luck with mine staying on.

Yeah, that could very well be it. I didn't actually look at the McMaster Carr reference. I was thinkin' more like the "external retaining ring", not the U-shaped ones. Of course, it doesn't help (me) that BMW calls those "retaining clips", not circlips

Sturgeon - I think it is stainless, actually. It is shinier then "dull grey".

I'm checking the instrument cluster, Zeke, but the one I have in hand looks a little different then the ones on my R1200GS instrument cluster.

Thanks for the replies - more are welcome.

If it was an F800ST, I would have immediately said footpeg retaining pin e-clip, but I looked on the fiche and for an F650GS it shows a cotter pin style, so I guess it's not that. Sorry.

Zeke - No luck at the instrument cluster. All three at home. Those clips have a little lip on them to help pull them off their posts. This one is completely flat. Like Sturgeon said, all the ones I found on the Fiche were internal. So this might not be a part off the bike.

I've ridden it a little. So far so good - nothing has fallen off or exploded.

One of the first places I looked was the passenger pegs, LBS, based on prior bikes.

But, still trolling for ideas

check the rear brake I think there is some kind of clip on the connection to the rear master.
Just checked mine and no circlip just a funky pin clip so it cant be that.

Thumb

Thanks one and all !

Spent quite a lot of time looking at the fiche and all over the bike following these suggestions and others. I Don't see any missing circlip anywhere. I've ridden a few times without falling apart so maybe this stray clip belongs on something else. Go figure.
