Looks like you had a fun trip. I'm jealous, I've been too busy to do much riding this year.

Oh, that river crossing you "wimped" out on, only an idiot would try that on a on a loaded wee.

OK, maybe a serious ADVr with a desire to get a front page pic might try it

My goodness it's been over a month since I've looked at my thread here. Yep the river was a little too deep and soft. The tire tracks you can see were as deep as my panniers and the spot I took the pic from was very steep. I still tell myself if I was on the little bike and had accompaniment .

The Lovely Rea and I are headed out tomorrow on the Wingabago. Original plan was over into PA and camp in the Allegheny National Forest, it's been a good 10 years since I've been over that way. Weather is not cooperating so we're probably heading South again.

We intended to go camping in PA for a couple days but the weather wasn't looking to good. We'll use that as an excuse to get away sooner rather than later for our next 2 up trip. We headed down to some of our usual favorites roads. Super slab 77 down into Parkersburg,WV across US50. We gassed up in Ellenboro and headed south to North Bend State Park for a picnic lunch.

We rode around some little 2 lane county roads and came out on 16 into Smithville. 47 east > 33 east and some small 2 lane shortcuts to pick up US250 below Elkins,WV. Set up camp at Lake Sherando outside Waynesboro,VA. Clean campground with showers. 453 miles for the day.

Skyline drive.

We went through Front Royal,VA and north off Route 55 runs Fort Valley Road 678 west in the shadow of Massanutten Mountain. I had camped over there in the mid 90's in the George Washington Nat'l Forest. We ran some little 2 lane roads and eventually came out on 340 in Luray and continued into Elkton for some country fried steak at the C & S Diner. Back up 33 to Skyline Drive and returned to camp. Great day of leisurely paced riding. 258 miles.

We packed up camp and were out the gate by 8. We hit I64 and exited north of Lexington,VA onto some side roads. 606>724>731>602 out to 39 west. The little side roads were cool and 731 was pretty gravel with a couple small waterfalls. We rode 39 across Goshen Pass. Pretty overlook and picnic area.

We continued across 39 and stopped in Richwood,WV for some good down home cooking. I had a chicken tender basket that included fries and a bowl of gravy of course.

We had ran through some rain 15 minutes of steady rain and 30 minutes of drizzle. After lunch it caught up with us and it was pouring so we hung out for a few and we were good to go. We continued on 39 to 16 and headed north towards home.

Ice Cream stop sitting in a little traffic triangle. I would guess it was gas station in a past life.

We ran 16 up to 47 and headed west towards Parkersburg. It had been a great ride home. Then the skies turned really ugly. We stopped and suited up. Frogstrangler came upon us complete with HEAVY winds and tree parts and debris blowing everywhere. Not the kind of ADVenture I seek, but it did/will make for a memorable trip.. We were probably 3 miles from Parkersburg and I quickly found some shelter. We were checking our Radar App on the smarty phone and it was not looking good. We sat under an overhang at a closed down store front for 45 minutes. I would have continued into Parkersburg had I realized how close we were.

After it let up we mounted the Wingabago and it wouldn't start. Hydro locked, it was raining that hard. Luckily I realized what was going on and we didn't break anything trying to continue with mashing the starter button. I was stumped for a moment and decided to try and rock the bike a little in gear. After clicking it up into OD and bumping it backwards we were on our way. We fueled up and hit I77 north in Pburg. Steady light showers let up as crossed the river. Skies were gorgeous as the clouds rolled to the east. We arrived home around 10pm after 1,200 miles in 3 days. A nice relaxed pace with less than 300 miles of super slab.

Broke camp and headed over to the Austin Dam. They had a fund raising event "The Dam Show" that was breaking up Sunday morn. Looked like quite the Party.

This little town probably could have hosted the "event".

Short non epic weekend, but fun and a little adventurous.

Highland Scenic Highway

Williams River Area off the HSH over onto the Forest Roads was a nice way to spend the Afternoon.

The night before setting up camp I went up Bear Run, there are miles and miles of great gravel forest and county roads where I almost tried to get lost.
