I recall when needing a part meant going to the dealership and picking it up from the dealers inventory.

the other one i now / got told is

you have to read loads of books called "how to ride motorbikes" and spend weeks working out what counter steering is / does. before you can go near or even ride a bike.


i was riding my bike for about 4years after my big bike test before i heard the word counter steering. that is 100% true.

I started riding in 1962. Many moons later , let's say around1988 or so, I heard new riders talking about their instructors
advice : " To turn right, push right, to turn left, push left.", or some such nonsense. ( To me. ). So, one day I go out riding and give this new jazz a try. Man, I weaved and bobbled so bad I thought it was over. Thought about this method
and decided to go back to just riding the goddam bike. No more thinking. More fun, safer too.

All this talk of countersteer is fukin ridiculous.
Are there really people that think this is a new way to ride?
Are there people that think you havent been doing this since you rode your first bicycle?
Are there people that have to think about which bar to pull or push?
Why they have to discuss it to death is beyond me.

Actually understanding counter steering helped my situational awareness. With how much that "where you look is where you go" was pushed I was afraid to look much past my mirrors.

Now I can crank it over and look back for merging without panic.

I think "where you look is where you go" is a myth. Sure, it happens to a lot of people, but there isn't some inherent physical reason it has to be that way. You can train yourself not to turn even if you look somewhere else. In fact, I think it is really dangerous to always try looking where you want to go. You want to constantly be scanning, left, right, near, far, mirrors, back and forth, etc. including the road right in front of you and then further out and back and forth.

Dakez has it right....not that h'e's always right! But I must say, most of the time. I grew up riding before the craze/instruction, etc. I actually pull the bars in the opposite direction I want to go.....just the way I learned. I get the push thing, but my brain is just wired the other way. I like it, and see no reason to change!

When i am talking bikes with people that i know with a lot of riding time when I am ready to walk off I ask them, "which direction do you turn the bars when you turn?"

Then walk away.

At the risk of opening a countersteering flame . . .

I too believe it a myth that one must consciously use countersteering.

I rarely consciously think about bar pushing or pulling BUT one thing from High Performance Riding that did stick with me was that if you ever find yourself heeled over and needing to tighten your line even more to avoid crossing the yellow line, hitting an obstacle etc., a deliberate push on the lower bar will usually help.

Few of us get to the adhesion limits of our tires in even our tightest turns and if the option is a potential low-side or a certain head-on colision . . . test the tires with a little more bar leverage. I have one cloverleaf on my way to work in which I test and practice this daily. It is the only time I deliberately countersteer. The rest is just ingrained from two decades of riding bicyles then 3 of riding motos.

Is it really "countersteering" when that's how you initiate the turn on any single track vehicle?
In the case of steering a motorcycle...wouldn't counter steering be turning the bars to the right after you've already started turning right (having FIRST pushed them the opposite direction of the turn, to initiate the turn)

You fuckers put WAY too much thought into this shit.
