PHX - Copper Canyon - The steepest, rockiest, hill I ever pushed a bike up!

I saw that the National Forest Service just opened a new OHV Trailhead in Camp Verde, AZ, called Copper Canyon. I put a ride together to check it and the trails it services out.

Beautiful staging area. Ramada's and a pit toilet.

Slowred - Honda 450X
Yardstick - KTM 530
ATRJerry - KTM 300
Nightstalker - Honda 450X

Were the list for today.

I was a bit concerned about our first trail on the list, 513. Rumors had it rated pretty difficult. Started out easy enough though.

Slowred

JerryK

A little rocky.

Yardstick.

Hard to get started again if you stopped.

Yardstick demonstrates how hard it is to stay on the trail with those big rocks knocking your front tire out from under you.

It's not easy to get your bike on the trail once you've been ejected.

It's hard to catch your breath when the relentless rocks never end.

Jerry on his way.

Having a 2 stroke, a rekluse, and a trials tire is a pretty hot setup.

For a minute, we thought we had topped out.

We hadn't.

I had a consistent run going until I rounded a curve and saw Yardstick stuck on this boulder pile.

That really took the jam out of my donut!

Looks like fun so far.
I was wondering if this might be the ride report that I see Yardstick's bike on the ground... yup!!

That seemed like the theme of that hill. If you were in the lead, you only had the rocks and steepness of the hill to contend with. If you were in the back, you had to stop if the person ahead got stuck on something. I'm not sure I would have made it through the boulder pile there, but I ran up on Slowred stuck in that spot, too.

Slowred, Yardstick, and I finally crested the hill and returned on foot to give Jerry a hand.

It felt like we pushed the bikes nearly the whole TWO miles up this hill. We were wiped out.

The question was do we pick up the bike or lay in the shade.

Two hours to cover two miles and my quota for rocky hill climbs has been met for the remainder of the year.

I noticed my chain guide weld to the swingarm was cracked during the numerous times my bike had been upside down coming up the hill. Well, it was no longer cracked.

Look, there's a sign! I think it said ROCKS ---> and <--- MORE ROCKS.

Yardstick contemplates the meaning of rocky trails.

Slowred and Jerry.

The nice smooth road ended at the 6526 foot high Squaw Peak. Great views of the Verde valley.

Loads of communication equipment up here.

I believe I've found the quote of the year!.

"Oh man, I was ready to drop to my knees and kiss the bladed, graded, goodness."
