Magellan Explorist XL problems

I am having some issues with my Magellan Explorist XL in that it has locked up on the blue "Explorsit XL" front screen and nothing I have tried seems to fix it. I've seen some past forum posts where you can press a combination of three buttons (nav + Out + power from memory) but that doesn't do anything:( Support for these units seem to have disappeared to make matters worse.
Does anybody know of any other means to try and get it working? (my batteries are good, are of equal voltage and correct polarity just in case that makes a diff).

Failuring that, what is the best GPS out there for proper dirt bike riding in the aussie bush and east to west desert crossing? 'Need something ruggered to suit my less than perfect riding style i.e. crashable within reason and can handle whooped out tracks.

Does the unit have an sd card? You might try removing it and see what happens.
