50 states of trailer plates.

First a little history of how this ride came about. I was talking with Zack, Partmaker from here, about Sturgis SD in the middle of April. He said there was a BMW dealer and not a HD dealer in town. There is a HD T-shirt shop, but no new bikes to be sold or serviced in town. I asked him to get me a Sturgis BMW shirt when in town and he graciously sent me one.

In May I rode out to the country where I have some family for a chicken dinner at a church. I happened to wear the Sturgis shirt instead of the Under Armour I usually wear when I ride. As it turns out my second cousin Keri was there with her son Carson who loved my BMW. She got married years ago and moved out to Phoenix to live with her husband Mark. So I don’t get to see her much anymore.

She asked if I go to Sturgis and I told her how the shirt came about. She said she owns a bar there. It floored me as she just doesn’t seem like the biker bar type. Here is a newsclip about it.

http://www.newscenter1.tv/stories/5894.aspx

Now on to the riding. This is day one. I meet my parent’s for breakfast on the way out of town.

The bike loaded up. This is my first time traveling northwest of Omaha NE and the first time on the bike to Nebraska.

I got a new camera for the trip and bungee corded it to the bike. I always wondered how folks took pictures from the bike as it was moving but it didn’t take long for me to get use to it.
Crossing the Missouri River towards the center of the state.

Wonder if we are going the same place?

Lunch in Kansas City, MO.

Pics of pics at the resturant.

I can only go 300 miles or so before fill ups so I guess I should get some fuel.

I’ve been in Iowa on my DRZ400 but now I’ve been on the GS.

Just as I remembered it.

Stopped for a break in a park.

I was told by several folks to take 2 across Nebraska and stay at the Arrow hotel. Train tracks run along the highway. My dad is on the board at an electric coop so he has told me about the lower sulfer coal from Wyoming. Here is some going east.

Here is another train.

About every 10 minutes it seemed I was passing a train going the oppisite direction. Coal, coal and more coal.

And finally the hotel.

Hope I don’t get towed.

Seems to be a friendly place.

By the time I was half way done with dessert I pulled the camera out and got a picture of what was left. I didn't get a picture of the steak I had for dinner. 600 miles on a bike builds quit a hunger.

How does that clock work again? Screw it, I’ll leave it on Central Time. Worse case I’ll be an hour early.

The bar opened the begining of July. I rolled into town on July 27.

A view from the top of the hill Wednesday morning.

On the way to Mount Rushmore.

Stopped and talked to another GS rider for a little bit.

Several tunnels in the area to ride through.

It was almost 1000 miles out and my TKC needed to be changed. I lucked into a used Tourance with enough tread to do the trip so I didn’t have a knobby on the front. I really wished I did just after I left Devils Tower. I asked a ranger how to get into some hills due east and he suggested Little Creek Road (Co Road 196).

One of the few cars I saw the whole time. This is the reason I have a dual sport bike.

A few more riders one I got back on pavement.

Todd,
Great pics.. I took my LT through there a few years ago, bought a Sturgis T-Shirt too! Then ended up giving it to my brother.
The roads out there are great. I hit as many of the roads around and through the Black Hills as I could, in two days. (Black Top only on the LT, Ha!) I was there after Labor Day, so the crowds were gone, the roads were open, all I remember thinking was, "no wonder everyone wants to ride out here." Just great roads, and beautiful scenery.
Are you still out there? There was a road that went straight up into the hills from the BMW shop that was one of the mechanic's favorites, it was a good one also..
Ride safe, let's see some more pics!

Also, not sure how you are coming back, but I took a road that runs east west, just south of the SD border, in NE. It went thru Ft Robinson..
Nice route if your looking for something different. Also, I went by Wounded Knee.. Sort of disappointing..

Jeff

I've been back since the 19th. I got a SmugMug account and have been slowly uploading photos. I would tell you how I came back but that would be jumping to the end the story.

Looks like a cool trip Todd. I really like the picture with the girl signing the black board.

I head back to the bar. Gotta pay for the trip.

Big fields need big tractors.

So riding back to the bar a guy flags me down and ask where the local BMW dealer is. He looks firmiliar. I ask if he’s Truckin Thumper since I recognized his pictures and bike from here. After he says ya I tell him who I am and have him follow me back to the bar. Small world (no pun intended).

ADV salute.

I also took him down to meet Kimmy.

She does photography at a lot of rallies. LINK

She’s a tall girl.

Cool old bikes on display.

A girl from the T-shirt shop next to the Firehouse.

I still like a St. Louis beer now and then.

Ron and Pat outside the bar.
