Wife put some teak oil on some more of the fir trim components.
From March 8, 2013

The crew installed the fir "backer plates" for the brackets.

And the siding showed up today!

We're pretty happy with the color. These pictures seem a little off to me- the trim goes really well with the siding in real life. The trim color is called "rocky coast" by Benjamin Moore, and Certainteed calls the siding color "pewter." I was kinda worried that the siding would look too silver or grey, but there's a hint of blue that goes nice with the dark grey trim. And MOST important- the wife loves it. (Good, because it was her choice, and she's been dreading it since it was ordered!).

Wiring should be done by Sunday. Central vac should be installed too.

Looks great! Have you any estimate on a move in date? I You're off the hook for a visit from us this year, so you have time to get that parking space done...........

The GC and I have a very good line of communication going. If I sense any bit of tension with the wife, I alert him, and he makes the problem go away. He's fucking awesome. Every time I thank him for something and say "E is happy" he responds, "Happy wife, happy life!"

We extended our rental lease through the end of April. We should be in by then even if there are a few odds and ends that need finishing. The GC said they'd jump to indoor work as soon as the plumbing is done. Worst case scenario we'll be moved into a house that's not finished on the outside, or has some trim needing work in "extra" rooms.
In all seriousness- you're welcome to visit anytime. Your parking spot shrank more than I wanted it to, but we'll make room for you.

Had a productive weekend.

The rough wiring is done everywhere but the utility room. All 3 panels are complete and look nice and neat. The electrician put in 2 long days to make it all work.

I also installed the cental vac, which didn't take long. I've actually gotta glue the last two fittings in the basement. I didn't buy enough of them so once I have them it'll be done. 5 minute job.

Even though a lot got done it was rather clumsy. If I was working at heights this weekend I'd probably be dead now.

I cut one of my knuckles wide open. Don't know how- just looked down and saw blood. Not 5 minutes later I put a gash in my other hand because I slipped with a chisel.

Today I was digging a ditch to channel running water around the driveway (it was starting to get really muddy) and when I went to move the tractor I somehow managed to stab a random piece of sheet metal underneath one of my fingernails. That hurt like hell and pissed me off. If I aimed for that piece of metal and TRIED to injure myself in this manner I wouldn't have been able to make it happen.

And to top it off I re-smashed my thumb. Last week I had an embarrassing motorcycle-tying-down accident which resulted in my thumb being smashed twice within 2 seconds. The pain from that had pretty much gone away until I smashed the ever-loving shit out of it with a hammer today. I was nailing some wire in place for the electrician and somehow managed to hit my thumb head-on.

Hopefully my coordination returns to normal soon.

Miraculously I used several power tools today including a table saw, miter saw, hammer drill, and hole hog without injury.

Edit- but maybe you guys can give me a lesson on swinging hammers.

You are banned from my shop also... I have an anvil and a wide selection of hammers, with my luck you would probably break my anvil.

The trick is to hit the nail/staple and not your thumb. Apparently you haven't learned that one yet.

I have experienced a lot of physical pain while working, but hitting my thumb with a hammer is the only one that makes me want to cry. In fact, I was in a crawl space stapling back a feeder for a panel, and was going to give the staple a really good whack to get it past the wood rot, and SMACK, found my thumb instead. I just sat down and had a little weep, then went right back to banging in staples.

Had a frozen culvert that's been causing problems. Water was starting to take over the driveway and getting worse by the hour:

So I put some steam to it and got it flowing. It was a LOT of water- maybe 1000 gallons or so. At least we've taken back control of the driveway.

Adam,
Are you going to put pegs in the knee braces? The reason I ask, is because I saw a beautiful garage build on garagejournal.com that had knee braces, and he added pegs to them to make them look more authentic, except, he put them in the wrong way!
Not everyone would notic,e but the people who do, know in an instant that they pegs exist only for show, and that they did it wrong.
