Thumb Thanks !

It took me some very well spend time over the last week or so to finally catch up on this great RR.
You could become a parttime writer for a lonely-planet type of guidebook !

Keep posting away and thanks for sharing the ride with us out here.

Cheers,

Erik.

Well, it finally happened.........I got robbed
I was camped on the beach in Puerto Lopez, Ecuador. I had not camped in my tent in a while. It was a beautiful night. Full moon. I was really looking forward to sleeping on the beach.
when I got in to my tent, this little dog that was hanging out with me curled up next to my tent and went to sleep. I wasn't tired so I was listening to some music on my phone in my tent.
Just after midnight, the dog woke up suddenly and started barking. I was half asleep at that point. I looked outside my tent to see what was going on. And I saw three figures walking toward my tent. My first reaction was they were coming over to check out my bike.
It was dark outside but I instantly noticed that they had their faces covered.
I knew that it was not good.
This all happened in about a ten second period so everything happened so fast.
I sat up in my tent. I noticed that two guys had knives and the other guy was pointing something at me that looked like a gun. They were shouting stuff in Spanish and I had no idea what they were saying.
One guy put the knife up to the tent and pushed the knife thru the mesh at me,
I yelled......don't cut my tent in a stern voice and I tried to unzip my tent so he would stop.
Half a second later, he slashed a big hole in the side of my tent and grabbed my phone. The three took off running in different directions.
I was pissed.
Half a second later, I tore thru the hole in my tent and made my way after them. One guy darted up the river. The other two ran down the beach toward the central area of town. I was following the guy with what I thought was the phone. I could see a light in his hands. He left the beach and ran down the main street in town. I was hot on his heals and closing. Just as I got up to him, he threw down the phone. I grabbed it and ran all the way back to my tent. We must have ran a half mile. All that hiking put me in better shape to out run that punk ass kid
I wanted to get back to my tent asap because I was afraid that one of the other guys was going to double back and take my wallet and everything else that I left behind. Oh, did I mention that I was only wearing my underwear when I was chasing them thru town.
I am happy that I got my $200 phone back but they ruined my $400 tent in the process.
Lesson learned............find a more secure place to camp next time
I thought I was in a secure place. I was on the beach in town.
It was in front of several hotels and restaurants. I never thought anyone would be so bold.
But they never thought anyone would be so bold and chase them down.
Maybe next time they will leave the motorcycle dude alone

robbed

It's 4:30 in the morning.
I have all my stuff packed up and I am waiting for the sun to come up.
Needless to say, I can't sleep.
My tent has a big hole in it.
And I am thinking those guys are coming back.
I have my switchblade ready if they do.
I dont want to be surprised this time.
I went to the police station here in town but it is closed.
I thought no wonder people are getting robbed. All the cops are sleeping.
And riding thru town at this hour, there are a fair number of people on the street. They are drinking and probably planning their next heist.

I hate this town and it has put a damper on my feelings toward Ecuador.
I am going to need a good nights rest after this. And there better be some hot Ecuadorian chicks throwing themselves on me to regain my most favored nation status

Dang. Shitty about the tent but better they didn't try to come after you. Props for choosing the fight side of flight or fight. Showed those pussies.

That's a bummer, but don't let that ruin your trip, and remember, heroes die faster...you've got a knife, the guy might have a gun. The you might see yourself in one of these :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anEuw8F8cpE

anyway, you were bound to run into guys like that sooner or later, it's good it was in such an uneventful way, i mean, you could easily been harmed and see all your stuff vanish instead of only a phone :)

Sorry to hear about your nightmare adventure. I would have expected stuff like that more in Colombia then down there.
Take care and be good to your body.

I've been following this thread for a while and I'm sorry to see this happen to you. Your trip through the Americas has been both amazing and inspirational. Getting robbed sucks, but you've accomplished a lot already and don't let this speed bump ruin the rest of your trip. Be well!

aww man, that sucks. :( the tent can be stitched up & sealed though, much easier & cheaper than you can.

Glad your OK Lalo. Don't let three low life punks ruin your trip for more than just that night. Get the tent patched up and move on.

Thiefs are in every country... I just had all my food, beer and campstove stolen out of my campsite @ Plaskett Creek on HWY 1 above Cambria... I KNOW who took it and they had bailed their camp @ '0-Dark-30...
I was never so pissed off!
Anyway, at least they didn't fuck with you or your bike; It could have been much worse...
