Sometimes they are open at the top. Sometimes you have to climb in to a cave before you reach the water.
This one was in someones backyard. I paid 60 pesos not knowing what to expect. I went down the lighted steps being careful not to bump my head on the top of the cave opening.
About 40 feet down, it got much warmer and there was the underground pool.
The cave was complete with stalagtites (I know its spelled wrong, but I think those are the ones that hang down.....right?)
And lots of bats too
I jumped on in. They said in places it was almost 100 feet deep. And the water was super clear.
I had it all to myself (which is just how I like it.....................most of the time
I brought my headlamp so I could swim way back in to the pitch black areas of the cave. As I was swimming, my light was shining on the bats flying all around me. I took some pictures but none really came out because it was just too dark and my camera and flash suck!
Now here is the funny part.........
I get out of the water and this guy in his 20's was there. His family own the place
I was speaking to him in my broken Spanish. He tells me that I should take my swimsuit off and wring it out.
I ignore him
He says it again
I pretend that I don't understand
He say it a thrid time.
I figure that maybe it was something that needed to be done so I wouldn't track water up the stairs.
I take off my swimsuit
He says something is"grande" as I put my underwear on
He then seemed to really like my underwear and tried to touch my cock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I slapped his hand away
I asked him if he was gay
He said yes
He said that the Mayans were gay too
I actaully heard that one
I grabbed the rest of my stuff and got the hell out of that cave.
I have been on the road for a while
I haven't had sex in a while
And that moment just confirms that I am definitely NOT GAY!
BTW, the name of the cenote is not Jotos.
I forgot the name. But that is the name I gave it.
If you find it, you will find out for yourself that you are in Cenote Jotos

OMG! I have been QUIETLY enjoying this thread from the beginning...living vicariously through your adventure... I'm now laughing so hard I can't read through the tears.... pause... sorry, but the picture this left in my head was just too funny...

on ward and up ward...

Those are the things you usually here
Especially from non travelers
Let me give you a different prospective

Yesterday I was trying to find a specific hostel in downtown Cali Colombia.
It is a town of about 3 million people.
The streets and signs didn't make sense
They are always lots of police in these towns.
Sometimes on every corner
So I stopped and asked for directions
To my surprised, he jumped on his motorcycle, let his post and said to follow him.
So there I was, getting my own, personal police escort thru the city of Cali to my destination.
Every time you here a story about the police taking money from someone, 99% of the time it's because they did something wrong. Maybe they were going too fast or whatever
And if they take a bribe then consider yourself lucky.
Its just the way the system works down here sometimes.
And you get off cheaper that way in the end anyway.
The whole time I have been traveling, I have not been asked for a bribe.
But I am heading in to Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia soon. So my feelings may change.
And if they do, I will give you the full report (hopefully with pictures).
Is everyone still with me?

Following with great interest...

Inspiration...check!

Hi Ed,

So here I am, glued to my couch following surgery to reconstruct my shattered collarbone...with nothing but time on my hands. I came across your RR this morning and could NOT look away!

- You have affected my perspective on life...this is POWERFUL stuff

Yeh, I just spent the evening with two guys from Oregon talking about how its not as easy as it looks
But it will also be hard to give up this life style when the money runs out
We spent the evening eating the best seven dollar steaks of our lives and using dynamite to blow stuff up
Good times
