There are about 20,000 Champagne producer but I bet you have only heard of less than 10. And the reason for that is marketing……not because their champagnes are better.
In fact, the smaller maker are better than the big guys in a lot of cases. And they are a lot less expensive too. The big guys have to pay for all the car races they sponser and all the big parties they throw for the rich and famous. So when you buy a bottle of Moet & Chandon Dom Perignon, you are getting an ok champagne for a lot of money. And you are paying for all those parties for the celebrities and you don’t even get invited!!!
Never again for me. I am supporting the mom and pops, drinking better champagne and saving some money too.
This one was my favorite. Great Champagne for only 16 Euros.
And I got to meet the whole family too

Even if you are bored at my report about wines of the world, you have to respect Champagne. Because nothing says "fun" like Champagne. And going and visiting the wineries there was double the fun for me.
And this bottle of M & C screams...................PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just stopped for a picture. I am not really a fan of their wine.
And it would be another $20 for the tour I had already seen and a taste of their yellow label stuff. But if they opened the La Grand Dame, then sign me up.

Shitty night

I found this cool camp spot in the vineyard.
I cooked up some pasta. Had ice cream for dessert. Bought ice to keep my bottle of champagne cold. It was a very nice evening. And then at 2 am, my stomach was not happy. I barely made it out of my tent in time and got my underwear down when I exploded all over the vineyard. What ever I ate that night.......it wanted OUT! And it kept coming out too. About 5 more times.
But once it was out, I was fine. Either the pasta of the ice cream was bad! It couldn't have been the Champagne.......it was GOOD

Last of the wine stories.....I promise!

I am heading in to Belgium tomorrow
And then up in to Norway.
No more winery visits for quite a while.

This morning, I stopped here.
It was one of the most moving moments of my trip. My eyes were fighting back the tears.
I will give the full story next time.
Right now, it is getting dark and I need to set up camp.
Plus a have a bottle of Pomerol with my name on it

More stories and pictures soon

Having said that the general run of the mill population of Zim are such great friendly people. Go via Botswana or Mozambique. Remember that if a speed restriction is 60KMH do not exceed 60KMH. Also be friendly and have time to chat. That alone works wonders. But then I am a born and bred African and I love this place - albeit a white African. If it wasn't for the politicians Africa would be the best place on Earth. Hang on, without politicians the world would be a far better place. When here contact me, else my favourite Sangoma (witch doctor to you Westernized heathens ) will haunt you forever. With the Rand US$ exchange rate you will have a great time.
I agree with you about taking precautions as you would anywhere in the would but don't agree with your statement about Zimbabwe.
2007 to 2009 I would agree with your statement, tho I still transited trucks through there. But since 2009 Zim has had many tourists entering it and with out trouble.
I spent 5 years driving overland trucks from Turkey to Cape Town. Been through almost every major road boarder crossing that there is in Eastern Africa. In all that time I worked in Africa I only had trouble that Id call trouble in 2 places. Once in Zambia and the other was in South Africa Johannesburg.
I would recommend traveling across Africa to anyone, take precautions. Dont travel at night and don't go playing in dark allies.
Africa is still one of my favourite continents in the world to travel!!
Once you have been there you will keep on going back.

Belgium

People ask me all the time what country makes the best wine.
The answer is not so clear.
But when it comes to beer, the choice is obvious.......Belgium!
the real question is, what beer from Belgium is best.
Now that I am here, I plan to find out.
I made two stops today to visit with the monks to discover their secrets of beer making.
And the secret is out........
Since they are not thinking about sex every 5 seconds like most men, they use those excess brain cells to devote to making the best beer in the world.
Ha

I was in Brugge (near the coast of Belgium) just a few weeks ago, and they have a great store with numerous sorts of Belgium beers, and a little bar at the end where some of the best are to be tasted. The place is called "2be - moodshopping". http://www.2-be.biz/fotos.php
I bought some "Gouden Carolus" and "Straffe Hendrik" , both 9%, lovely tasty beers.

And try get your hands on the Monistary/Trappist brand "West Vleteren" if you can...see : http://www.sintsixtus.be/eng/home.htm

Keep posting away and wishing you a speedy recovery !

On Friday, one of my coworkers rolled up on a brand new watercooled GS1200, outfitted with hard bags and aftermarket crashbars. Naturally, I pointed him toward your ride report

I vote for more pics of the Champagne region!

I work with a guy named Rusty Steele. Part irony, and part destiny, he works as a material scientist/researcher.
