So, people ask how much camping gear we take to Baja when we ride across the border for the weekend......
This much.......

Ok frequent readers, back to the fire.
Some of you may recall from earlier pics that I have been too cheap to buy a motorcycle specific bag to strap on the back of my 990. I use the old red waterproof rafting bag seen below. ![]() This bag has been on many trips, and I can never find the same piece of rope to tie it on with. So, on this last trip (without the big grey picnic boxes to tie the red bag to), I seemed to have a little trouble keeping the bag on the bike. ![]() After this happened a few times, the bag was no longer waterproof, and Rollergirl's nice shirt wasn't so nice anymore. Not exactly sure what the problem was. I have always been able to attach the bag so that it stays firmly in place. I tied it on even tighter and took off down the road. This road is fast and I know there are a couple of rises where I can jump the 990 if I am going fast enough. I stopped after a few miles to wait for the girls, and..... ![]() ![]() The bag had tipped over backwards and was blocking both exhausts. FIRE!!! I got the bag off and tipped everything out, hoping to save some of our clothes, but every single thing was on fire - even the toiletry bag. ![]() Well, if everything is ruined, I don't really need to try and save anything. And in that case, I don't need to take any of this stuff any further into Mexico. Put it all in a pile and wish for marshmallows. ![]() Here is Rollergirl thinking that she married an idiot.

![]() Waited till the fire was out before we took off. Hooray for single track! ![]() This pic makes it look like Ted is riding pillion. ![]() Lunch stop. Time for a quick Spanish lesson. ![]() Rollergirl has a new friend - Wendy the taco seller. ![]() This color only exists in Baja for a short period of time. ![]() 'Gordoniz' is Spanish for 'delicious quail cooked and sold at the side of the road'. ![]() Time to replace our going-out-to-dinner-clothes. ![]() Yeah baby! ![]() Not bad for $15. Only problem was that my thighs are too big for 'skeeny jeans', so there was absolutely no way that I could swing my leg over the 990 to ride the bike to the restaurant. How do kids wear these awful pants? Had to go out in my riding pants. Valle de Quadalupe has some fantastic restaurants. Only had a weekend, time to head home. ![]() Perfect terrain for a big fat 990! Too fat for the rocks at the top of this hill. ![]() So now it is for sale. I need less. I love this amazing bike. ![]() ![]() What should I get next? XR650R? 690 Enduro? 530 EXC? TE610? Husaberg 570? I need good mpg, big tank, ability to carry camping gear, reliability, and singletrackness! (I just made up that word)

Enjoying your ride reports! Cool your wife enjoys the sport... Envy of all the guys... LOL. I could relate with you about all the thinking of what bike to own, sell or not sell, buy, etc, etc.... Crazy we are always pondering and never completely satisfied, even though we sure appreciate what we have... Gracias!

I love my wife.
I was once again telling her how difficult it was to make a decision regarding the perfect bike. She politely pretended to listen with interest. She asked me to explain about the bikes I was considering. I started telling her about the various brands and their pro's and cons. She then explained to me how I was an idiot, and how I could ONLY look at KTMs. She reminded me of the amazing times we had had on our KTMs, the fact that they featured in our wedding, and the fact that we have a wonderful KTM store in town. Well, that makes the decision process a lot easier! Ok then, 990 out - got/had one. 950 SE out - too similar 690 nice, but out - too expensive, not enough used bikes available. 530 similar to my 450, used ones available locally for a decent price. Lots of after market goodies available to turn it into a long distance dirt bike. Done! Deposit paid on a well used '08. 5.5 gallon tank purchased. If it doesn't fit what I want, I can always sell it. What? Not much oil you say! If I look hard, I can probably buy some oil in Baja and do a quick oil change. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders. Now, what little bike should I get? 250 xcfw or 250xcw? or maybe a 200, or even a 300? At least I know I am only allowed to look at one brand!
