Is it weird that I almost never take photos in town? I suppose I like remoteness, and more natural things.
Have I said how much I love wide open spaces?

I never felt rushed, not once during the CDR. We got up at reasonable times and everyone had plenty of time to do their morning routines. Some days we would be on the road before 0900. We also never pushed beyond 9 or 10 hours of riding, which was why I could get up the next day and do it again .
Thanks guys!

Targhee National forest.
Me and Scott bail trail!

The railroad trail was fun for awhile..... For me really just not the most fun riding. Deep rutted straight 2 track with thick pea gravel and whoops...... I started loosing the surroundings to concentrate on keeping my bike upright. Smacks of effort. Reno and H14 were ahead of me and Scotty was behind. We came to an intersection and waited for the group to gather. No Scott. Where is Scott? OH there he is.... . He had decided to bail the trail.

Smart guy I'm with him. Trail bail!!!
H14 and Reno completed the task.

On a KLR?

I rode the length of it on a fully loaded street bike...over 600 lbs worth!

The cattle guards were fun.

It was nice camping along the Warm River, that whole area needs a return visit and some more time spent there. Steve, Scott, Jax, and myself decide we want to stay on the trail and ride the old railroad bed. The intel we had on the railroad bed was that it's narrow with soft volcanic ash. Bob on the big GS and Bill in the truck decide to bypass and meet us in Island Park.

We get to the RR bed and there is a good gravel road that runs parallel to it but the trail is the RR bed so we jump up on it. We knew it was over 20 miles to the end so with the issues we've had with dust the last couple days we decided to gap ourselves out and meet up at the end. We didn't go far before we realized how treacherous this was going to be. You basically have two ruts in about 10 inches of soft volcanic ash. Steve's up front and decides to wait at the first crossroad we come to and make sure everybody gets to that point OK. I catch up to him and agree we should stop at each crossroad just in case somebody drops their bike we're close enough to help.

We hear Jack's bike and soon we see his headlight so he's OK so far, then we hear Scott's bike but don't see a headlight. We hear his bike getting closer but don't see his bike, doesn't make any sense until we look to our left and there he is down on the good gravel road. Seems he had enough of the RR bed and dropped down to the gravel road. He pulls up and says something to the fact that he doesn't have anything to prove to anybody and was taking the gravel road the rest of the way. I'm not sure but I think he was crying. Jack said something about the size of our testicles and rode off with Scott.

The rest of the way was slow going 25-35mph was about all I was comfortable with. You had to keep your tires in the rut if you let your front wheel get into the ash it would try to take the bars right out hands and put you on the ground quick. I tested this once and did everything but wreck, afterwards I did more 25mph and less 35mph. We hit a long section of deep holes that was like riding woops. I was about sea sick by the time we were done and my thighs were burning, it was a pretty good workout.

Steve in a good section. You can see how deep the rut is by looking at his front wheel up on the right side. The berm built up in the middle was deeper than the ones on the sides.

It varied in width and surface along it's 30+ miles..... some parts were fast hardpack other sections were sandy and whooped out...parts of it had pea gravel that also varied in depth. We rode in the opposite direction as y'all did too....

Since you started on the South end...did you see the tunnel?

Couldn't go through it tho....had to ride the ledge.

I missed the tunnel.....

Well if we do it again next June from North to South I'll ride it until the narrow spot and bail.

In hindsight I should have just parrelleled it for a few miles and then cut back in............

OBTW, the KLR will be on a diet next time. Reduced clothing and food.

This is what I didn't use..........

Funny stuff Banjo

Looking really similar. I'm having a blast looking at advtenn and rabbot's trip this summer. Triumph seems to be the abductor!!! Mystery solved!!
