Oregon & Southern Washington Bucket List

My brother and his adult son are getting brave enough to cross the border from California later this summer for a few days of paved riding. They're willing to ride gravel short distances to a destination, but have generally nixed the general idea of anything but Tarmac, blacktop, macadam, concrete, or similar surfaces. Darn. Brother is riding a Honda ST1100, nephew needs to buy or rent something-- he's talking about a R1200R. I'm planning on meeting them in Crescent City in order to escort them over the border and riding with them for three or four days. They'll be on their own for a few days after I head for home.

Anyhoo, they have no specific itinerary or agenda. The only thing on their list at this point is Crater Lake and maybe Hells Canyon. If you were acting as guide, what other sights, sites, destinations and locations would you suggest? I've got a few ideas of my own but am looking for other thoughts. If there's more than two or three miles of gravel to get there, forget it.

Thanks!

I can't give too many suggestions; however, if they are going to Crater Lake they can find nice camping in the Prospect/Union Creek areas. There is Joseph Stewart below Prospect, Mill Creek is only maybe 1/8 mile of very well maintained gravel and is just past Prospect and closer to Crater Lake, but before getting to Union Creek. Union Creek is all paved and a really nice campground. Those would make good places to camp the night before an early morning jaunt to Crater Lake. From there I'd probably head toward Bend.

I would imagine a person could ride from Crescent City to those campgrounds in a day and not feel too tired to set up camp. I can't remember the mileage, maybe a couple/few hundred from Crescent City to Union Creek?

Excellent suggestion, duck. That road looks like fun!

Shoulda stipulated that, in addition to an aversion to gravel, they don't camp. Can you believe it? Sheesh. BTW, Crater Lake Lodge is almost exactly 200 miles from Crescent City. Just FYI...

Sounds like somebody needs an intervention...enema...induction...introduction or something like that, They're missing the majority of the world. I know a few roads around the PNW that one could make a loop out of. We'll talk.

Heppner to Ukiah, Ukiah to Baker City or La Grande, (Blue Mountains are awesome, great roads) Baker City to Unity, then to John Day, Joseph to Hells Canyon, just about anywhere through there. Oregon DOT has a good m/c map.

We may be there in another week.

I just rode just about everything Scott F. listed today. 400 miles of the most scenic roads I have ever done in Oregon.
