3 KLRs and on BMW do the TLH 2012

Tomorrow I set out on an adventure to the 'Big Land' and beyond. Completing the trans lab highway counterclockwise, down through Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and home in Newfoundland. I am travelling with three experienced riders from St. John's on this epic adventure. Should take around 10 days, but may stay a few extra and look at PEI.

The TLH is a highly saught after adventure ride in North America, but soon the Goose to Wabush road will be paved, so there is a push for riders to "get 'er done!"

This is what I am riding, fully loaded: R1150GS

And here is a SPOT TRACKER link for the trip as well if you would like to follow along our progress.

Yup. Staying at the Alexis hotel. $115 for the night.

had our first bit of dirt yesterday from Red Bay to PHS. Very smooth and well travelled. No problems. There have been a few rain showers which is keeping the dust down . As we got closer to PHS the dust got a little worse but manageable. Woke up this morning with all roads wet, showers in the forecast. Should be a good day

RR and photos will follow later

After meeting a few other riders also doing the TLH One from Nove Scotia on a Varadero was heading to Cartright. Have not seen him since the ferry crossing yesterday

I'm sure we'll see a few CW travelers

Off to Goose bay shortly

Good morning;

I'm on for the ride...We did the TLH three years ago, East to West. The section between Cartwright & Goose-bay was not built yet, and we took the all night ferry ride. That alone was an experience.

The 4 of us had a great time, 3 BMW GS's and myself on a DL1000 V-Strom. I think we probably saw a total of 8 riders (all Eastbound) on the entire TLH.

Have fun, and be safe..

Doug

Curious to know how the roads have been?

You seem to be making good time...

How was the ride from HVGB to Labrador City?

TLH ccw Red bay to goose, road in extremely good shape except for the "marble" effect of the loose rocks on road Dust was not bad as we had a few showers.

Goose to Churchill. 100 kms pavement then dirt to goose. Twisty dusty roads with construction
Churchill to lab city, fair bit of construction, rest same as goose to Churchill, except for the last 140kms of pavement into lab city. Very boring.

Lab city to baie comeau. What can I say. Wholly shit !!!!
40 kms of boring pavement with heavy wideload trucks.
Then Things improve
from mount wright to fire lake. Twisty dirt turns. Wow. Lots of fun

Then it goes to shit! After fire lake you hit a pavement of extreme boringness, then construction as they continue tr road

When you are traveling along side manic 5 lake (name unknown to me), very scary. Heavy heavy traffic, super wide loads, speeds and dust and Arsehole truck drivers make the ride frightening to Gabrielle

Note gas is $1.7/ltr there

Then things get fun with lower traffic and twisty turns to manic 5

Now this is the best part: from manic 5 to baie Comeau. Deals gap is for pansies. You have 210 kms of twist twisty 90kkm/h paved roads. Wow! If you can manage to do 90kph on this for 210 kms....good for you. It was amazing.

Ride Report

Day one I met up with my fellow riders from St. John's and another RTR member from Corner Brook to journey up the great northern peninsula. The weather turned out great. We completed 325kms and stayed at St. Barbe Hotel.

Stopped for a break in Parsons Pond

Here at Hawke's Bay for lunch. Fortech headed back home on the Varadero

Managed a few lighthouse pics along the way

Here at the cabin for the night

Day two looked like foggy weather in the forcast for our crossing and journey to Port Hope Simpson.
We had 265 kms for the day ahead of us with the first dirt road ahead.
88kms were paved to Red Bay, the remaining to Port Hop was all dirt.
Met a group from the states on a Goldwing tour, and a couple on RTs.

Locked and loaded!

Once off the Apollo, we headed stright to the mandatory photo-op

Travelling on the last bit of pavement before Red Bay

And now the first bit of dirt roads...

Spent the night at the Alexis in Port Hope...

getting gassed up!

When we arrived, a bird flew in for a landing. Chris was up on the Labrador fires...

Day 3 was beautiful. We had 410kms of dirt and no gas stations along the way.

John with the GoPro

Stopped to check out the flies...actually they were not to bad.

At Crooks rest stop.

Wayne boogieing along..

I ran out of gas just beofre Churchill River Bridge...damn! Luckily I had a gas can with me.
Made it to our first stop in Goose.....Tim Hortons!

Met Wolfgang from BC (actually Germany). He is on a cross Canada tour, ten days for him to get to Goose from BC...

The boys spent the night at Hotel North 2

Met three other riders heading CW, thier fouth rider had a spill and busted up his collar bone, fractured rib, and punctured lung!

I stayed at a friend of mines on Otter Creek....bears are a problem there as well.

Day 4 wqs great again. We had 540 kms ahead of us, first out of Goose Bay we had around 60kms pavement, then dirt to Churchill. From Churchill the last 120kms to Wabush was paved. There have been many TLH Motorcycle riders injured or killed on this section. Lots of traffic and dust. Speeds must be kept at or below posted limints or you'll be in for a trip to the hospital, or worse!

Once out of Goose we stopped near the area where a fellow rider was killed a week before.

Rest in peace Eddie

Proceeded onto Churchill Falls, here is the power to Quebec Hydro that are are paying pennies from NL and selling to the Eastern seaboard making billions of dollars off of our backs

This used to be a river.

Hit the pavement for the last 120kms or so into Wabush/lab City

Made it safe into the "City" Boys are beat

Kms so far for me from Pasadena

Day 5 we had a challenging day ahead of us: Quebec truckers!

We first stopped at the tourist trap for stickers.

WE had around 590 kms ahead of us, first 60 or so kms paved to Mount Wright, then a most awesome twisty dirt road to Fire Lake , WOW! that was fun!!!!!!!!!

From Fire Lake back on the pavement for around 100kms then into construction. Not fun at all. From their along Lac Manicouagan was the most terrifying experience I have ever had riding. Truckers with extremely wide loads flying along well above the posed limits, with absolutely no regards to motorcycles at all, sending dust clouds in the air for 30-40 feet and 100's meter long!!! Very dangerous and not at all fun!

Then you arrived at a rip off station called Gabriel

Yes... $169.9 per ltr

Here comes the boys.

From there to Manic 5 was again very awesome, twisty dirt raods, with little traffic. Lots of fun....
Then we hit Manic 5 Dam. WOW that thing is huge

From Manic 5 to Baie Comeau is 210 kms of twisty turns and hills. Devils gap has nothing on this. Unfortunatly there is no gas stations, so all you cruiser riders are outta luck!
Close to Baie Comeau is another smaller dam, Manic 2

Picked up a passenger

Once in Baie Comeau, gassed up and headed for the boat to cross to Matane for a camping night...

Here are the TKCs after the 210 twisties!

Day 6, we are finished the dirt, and strickly pavement here on out. We have over 600kms ahead of us to Miramichi along the Acadia coast.

Here is the entrance to the camp site...NO ENGLISH AT ALL. VERY FRUSTRATING!

Stopped at Tim's, saw this across the way:

Lighthouse in Matane

Couple of covered bridges...

Few churches

Stopped at a Outdoor store, again, no English spoken, looking for a Quebec sticker. No one understood what I was looking for , so I headed out of the store. When I had my helmet on, one of the girls (well endowed) showed me a sticker, so I cleaned a sopt on the Zegas and she was nice enough to give me a show and put the sticker on...

Onto New Brunswick.

There was a Rock n Roll festival and car show at Marimichi

Conferation Bridge

Mermaid's Purse...can you see it?

Welcome to PEI

Instead of tenting we rented a cabin for the night! Green Park, PEI

Picking clams...

After travelling throughtout Lab, Quebec, and NB, we didn't see any flies till we hit this place. Man there were wicked!
