this is ADVrider's traditional Dakar Cliff Notes thread. Its purpose is to offer the day's most important information and media, interviews and tweets that show up all over ADV and the rest of the net.

The Official Event Coverage thread - aka the firehose - will be moving at a brisk pace and will be hard to follow for all but the most desperate fans.

This thread will be locked, so that only moderators can post here. The mods will try to move the most informative posts here and we hope that the result is something everyone can follow.

Here is the route, not difficult to work out this time, thanks to the map provided by the organisation. Anticlockwise, in red, its more of a short endurance loop with a few dune crossings, its in a zone frequented by dune buggies and rails. I normally dont put this stuff out the day before but given the tail of the field are opening the course, I dont think they have the means to make this useful by this time...










In respect of getting a more precise picture out there of each special I think it is going to be very difficult this year.

Looks like they are going to screw the Google earth mapping nuts (like me), by duping everyone into where the Dakar special is not going to be running by publishing even more inaccurate maps. I have spent the past hour trying every which way to get some proper maps and distance tables off the official website, like IL SS FL etc - no can do, not even on the french site. Any bright sparks out there have a hotline to someone who can help us from the ASO?

What I have found are some basic maps, but none of the usual long sections with the distances... Im hoping against hope that they actually publish them in some kind of live popup on the day..otherwise we will have a lot of F5ers twiddling thumbs...The maps are a joke with only the liaisons being more precisley shown but the specials with a only a very vague flamboyant line, which I do not believe is anything line the actual route except the general direction over the course of the route.

So you see what I mean look at Stage 2 & 3 below, both start from the same bivouac near Pisco

New for 2013: The bike's prologue/SS1 times will e multiplied by a factor of 5, cars by factor 3 to ensure everyone goes full speed and no one holds back for a better starting position in SS2.

The question is will they want to... tomorrows stage is going to be DECIDEDLY more navigation, longer and in that instance, picking a start spot for SS 2 somewhere around # 10 to fifteen, could see you pull an early five to 10 minute advantage by end of leg two, if you can pull of some stealthy navigation and passes out on the piste... like HogWild mentioned last night when we were debating the pro's and cons of the prologue/SS1 and the multiplication factor (5?) for SS1 stage times.

Short day one down. Did well in special but busted 5 minute penalty for speeding during liaison . Dumb! Warm in the desert. The 3 day "Dakar Hell" starts first thing

SS1 is runnning in reverse order, with Chaleco posting a first best in front of Verhoeven an Chilean hotshot Quintanilla. The best are yet to come.

SS1 results: 1.López (CHL), 2.Verhoeven (NLD) , 3.Quintanilla (CHL), 4.Cabrera (CHL), 5. Despres (FR), 5.Casteu (FR).

If the x5 rule for the prologue stands, Despres (+13sec on track) will be 1'5" behind Chaleco in the overall standings.

But he will be exiting to the track in the 29´th position, that's around 40 minutes behind the Chaleco and 28' behind Despres. If the course is not to tight and overtaking is not a problem that's not a bad place to be.

I have no idea how you manage to pace yourself in a 12 km clocked section, but I would think Helder's bet for today was to go just a bit slower. The 5x factor really messes all the tacticts! Interesting!!!!
