Installing a CPR air filter on my 990

I just received a UNI UP-123 crankcase filter to route away from inside the CPR also. I do not notice in the photos the PCV valve anywhere. Is it needed if not going into the CPR box? If not i will simply cap it in place.

i removed the check valve, that one is just in place to prevent/reduce oil vapors sucked out of the crankcase by the intake.
When you route a breather outside the airfilter there is no need for the check valve any more. And it gives you also a improved breathing surface of 200%.
Hose diameter is 15mm and the check valve connection diameters is only 7,5mm, and with a breather you get the full 15mm diameter

The UNI filter has a tab with a hole in it on the bottom for mounting which I used to attach it to the bracket for the MAP sensor. I left the PCV valve attached to the CPR's baseplate and capped it along with a hose clamp. Should have gotten the baseplate without hole for the PCV. Oh well, the reason I did this is that I could hear the ball in the PCV valve "clacking". Annoying. I'll see how messy or not this is going to turn out later.

Are you guys worried about water getting into the engine with those breather filters? I'm not sure how that could happen but would it be a possibility?

Sure, there is the possibility but in my case no. If I'm in that deep I've already screwed up!!!

I agree, getting that deep in standing water would be a problem for me too. What about water spray during a normal crossing? Or a spill while crossing? I guess that could effect the air filter too. I've not done any deep water crossings with the CPR yet. For that matter I've not ridden in rain either so I've not been able to take a look at secondary water affects. I like getting the breather vent out of the air box, just wonder about how high the vent should be mounter and if its better to include the PCV valve inline.

One of the reasons for a PCV valve, in that it is one way is so that in the event of a backfire through the intake tract it doesn't blow back into the crankcase. Being outside the airbox should be of no consequence in that regard. However, without it you could ingest water, but being at the same level as the throttle bodies I see no benefit. If I were planning on doing a lot of water crossings I'd stay with the stock airbox.

While I'm waiting for my Safari tanks from CJ I decided to install one of these on my 11 990.


I'm also running the Remus 2-1 and was wondering other then the map (Sounds like moto-treks is included in the download from CPR and should get me close) if there was any new developments I should know about?

I think most people that put this filter system are looking for power. Well I no that cool air is power. So running the crank case breather into the air box to me is crazy. Your bike is trying to breath in 200 degree air. No power there!

As for water crossing. NO WAY! I live in Costa Rica and to get to point A to point B I cross rivers. 21,000 miles and no water in my engine. The crank case is pushing air out. Not suck air in.

Dropping it in a deep river? Hell your already screwed. And yes water is going to go in. But the only difference is the other way may take about 3 seconds longer. If it's not air tight then water will get in.

CPR installed and Map loaded.

I'm waiting on my K&N filter to get here and I'm just going to leave the hose where it's at and tie the K&N to the frame in front of the CPR where the prefilter on the stock box sat.

I did a lot of watercrossing, mud slinging and rain riding and the prefilter didn't pass water so I don't expect the CPR nor K&N will be a problem. Oil repels water, engines run in 100% humidity and with the addition of the CPR Prefilter I have no worries.

Is the base plate off a 950 the same as a 990 one?

There i a difference of 1cm in relative distance. The 950 holes need to be closer to each other by 1cm on the symmetrical axle of the motorbike.

the last ride i did, the engine was lightly spitting oil through the breather.
so the balance shaft seal is most likely shot.

so a crank case breather is also easy for detecting these problems
