Here's a strobe video I took on the machine. It shows the onset of valve bounce on the SOHC head at 7,600 rpm with a fairly weak spring. The first half of the video is at 7,400 and the second half at 7,600.

Yes, it probably should, but...

My plane won't be registered as a Sonex, per their wishes. Sonex522 is simply the serial # for my plans set.

Also, Dan Weseman's Cleanex was given that name because of the superb job he did putting it together - it's as "clean" as they get. It wouldn't be right for me to make such a claim.

Nice video. It looks like it's trying to bounce at 7400rpm..

Actually all you're seeing is a wiggle and some rotation at 7,400 rpm. At 7,600 there is a much more pronounced triple bounce. It's that bounce that robs power - and breaks stuff! Here's how I know:

This happened at 8,700 rpm (with stronger springs) in a similar bounce scenario. Took all of 30 seconds at that speed for the valve to fly out.

I'm really surprised at how fast the valve spring is rotating in that video. I had no idea they spun so much or so fast. Is that all just caused by spring thrust as it expands and contracts?
