Please enlighten us on why the Corvair is a poor candidate for a flight engine. Ready to fly, it is substantially lighter than a Continental O-200 and it makes more thrust as proven with dynomometer testing. It has a forged crank and rods, and forged pistons are installed in flight engines. It is heat tolerant and durable, with a factory CHT redline of 575 F. With the addition of a 5th bearing on the front of the case (not pictured on my engine, but one resides there now), propeller loads are supported for even greater crankshaft reliability. The dual coil/dual point distributor ignition has been failure free since it's development by William Wynne. Dual plugs are not needed in a small bore, high compression, six cylinder engine. Modern Viton o-rings and better quality gaskets make for leak free engines. It's a real airplane engine. Period. The Corvair engine has been flying since the Corvair was introduced in 1960. |
