That's a leeboard, I'm thinking: it serves the same function as a centerboard. I can't really see it in the pic, so I could be wrong.

Yes it does. These are flat bottomed boats and don't have a keel or centerboard.

That is such a beautiful ship: so well proportioned with such pleasing lines. The pic with the Carnival condo-block docked nearby really makes this obvious.

Nice thread! I grew up on the Mississippi. Not "on" the water but my hometown is on it. Towboats and barges were an everyday sighting on the river except when it was frozen over. We never had any pleasurecraft and I always took river traffic for granted.

It's weird. Now that I am grown up and living in Colorado, towboats have sparked my interest again and make sure to go to Lock and Dam 15 on Arsenal Island in Moline/Rock Island, Illinoise when I go "home" to visit to see the boats up close and talk to the crew.

I don't have access to my photos since I'm working so I'll attach a few internet photos of one of my favorite towboats, the MV E. Bronson Ingram of Ingram Barge Company.

I love working boats.

How about some barges - here's a few on the Mosel in Germany just over the border from Luxembourg (check out the vineyards in the back of each of these pics - nice countryside):

Here's one on the Rhine with a castle in the back:

One last one from the Rhine

I live along a river (Schelde), not far from Antwerp, and these are the barges we see every day.

Some more working boats - these are from Dingle, Ireland - I love all these boats - each beautiful in it's own way:

Very cool! I love river traffic. The following pics aren't mine. I need to find mine!

On the Upper Mississippi, from Minnesota to Cairo, Illinois, due to the Locks and Dams, only 15 barges are allowed. Three abreast, five long.

On the Lower Mississippi River, from Cairo, Illinois, to the Gulf, many more are lashed up. I've yet to see more than 15 in person! Yes, that is 54 barges!

And here is an odd sighting.
