Hola

It sounds like your crossing was pretty "interesting" with the big swells and welding of engine valves to get you to Cartagena!!

I think you must have stayed at a different island to us on the first night - I don't recognize the toilet......ours was slanting more into the sea

We are in Ecuador now, heading to Peru in the next week. Where are you off to next?

Amazing photos as always, but a couple on the previous page really stand out and should probably get entered in a photo contest. National Geo, etc. The thatched hut at the tip of the island/peninsula or the sunset canoe with the bird overhead. If you put that one on Smugmug for sale I'll be your first customer.

Where are you

Paul,

Where are you at present. My bike is in Cartagena and I'm flying tomorrow to pick it up.

Your photos are getting progressively better.

cheers dave

Sounds great

Hi,

I am on a round the world trip on a KLR650 with my girlfriend.

Lots of great info here. We are going through Mexico then Cuba and central and south america next. Any advice?
What about going to cuba with vs. without the bike? We also want to couchsurf in Cuba which we hear is illigal.

Thanks
Alex

Hey Paul,

how long in advance did you have to book the Stahlratte to be onboard on the date you picked?

Thanks!

you know i hear that from a lot of people, but it is a lot cheaper to travel than most think, for example the last four months is averaging around $45 a day, and honestly i am living pretty well and haven't camped for months, and i usually wild camp a lot, if i was doing that then i would be around the $30 a day range...something to think about

thanks for coming a long for the ride...P

yea the seas were the worst they can ever remember...lots of seasick people, eating hardly anything...the motor was a problem, yes i fixed it but it was basically a patch to get us in, we drifted for almost four hours whilst i was working on it!!! they have new parts ordered and hopefully they will come in soon as i have to get back on to go to Cuba, so i am mosre interested than most

right now i'm in VZ, amazingly cheap, got free gas and a hotel room for $6, but more on that later...you will love Peru

the stahlratte is going to Cuba twice next year, once in feb and again april, but i did hear there is a boat that goes from somewhere near Cancun that a lot of Mexican roders use, if you are not on a US passport then that is probably a better option as then it would be open and up to you when to return, you can rent bikes in Cuba if you wanted but i wanted the freedom of my own ride...internet is basically non existant and kind of illegal except in larger hotels so i guess that would mean couch surfing is too? not too sure on that, you need to stay in Casa particulars, basically in people house who have a permit to house tourists, if they don't have that right, you and them can get in big trouble

read about scams regarding casa particulars as i have heard there are quite a few different ones happening right now, i will be able to tell you more when i get back in March if you haven't headed there already

i contacted them initally in July to sail for December, they told me they are booked thru end of Feb, but they always have a standby list, and there are other boats running too, the independence, is the one people talk about but i have no info on it, best place to check on that would be HU

Sounds like you are heading East in Venezuela. Hope you got to stop in Merdia up in the Andes, some of the best riding in the country imho. You going to Angel Falls? If so there is a good German expat in CB that has a great Posada and good deals to the falls. There's a neat jungle slide South of the Orinoco River near the Colombian border you could hit on your way back.

merida is a plan, but not angel falls isn't, time and budget is killing me here, small delays change plans dramatically as you well know! Silviu and i may have a chance to meet up in Ecuador as he's trying to get a ride in before heading back to work, if that pans out then i may ride back with him from EC to VZ...now that could be interesting

took off from Cartagena as a six pack

rode by all the Ant eater signs...no ants around so i guess they are good at what they do

thru the banana plantations and into Riohacha

we had problems finding a hotel for six riders so with a little help from the Policia, and then an escort we eventally got some where...the cop sitting on the bike wouldn't let me take the photo until he had his cap on...

took a stroll at night down to the 1.2km long pier where there is a statue of Fatima that all the locals have there photo taken with or just stand and admire...to me she looked like she was in a Ma Bell phone booth

left in the morning and got some street gas at 50% on the side of the road from the locals and headed to the border

plan was to leave CO and ride into VZ but there were elections on and the VZ border was closed because we were told a lot of columbians have a VZ ID number which allows them to vote and guess what...those votes can be bought, so no one was allowed over, we did try the "but we're gringo's approach" no go, hasta manana

kedgi (dwight) was supposed to the on the steel rat but missed it, he made time out to come to Cartagena and ride with some of us, super nice guy, he was stoked about leaving Columbia and heading to VZ, as the photo shows, right up to the point when we were told no! so he headed south and doesn't get to enjoy free gas

so we headed back to Maicao to get a hotel now as four riders, when we stopped for a drink Bubbletron (alison) was an instant hit with the locals

and this is the place we found...hotel frontera...$15 a bed, 12 kms from the border...SOLD

took a walk into town and found a small bakery open at night, watched a motorcycle wreck happen right outside and three body fly (no photos) when they eventually got up lots of shouting and pushing was happening, so at a border town this is the time to disappear

while doing the paperwork (not doing details on SA borders as there are way to many and they are so easy) me and President Chavez had a chat

and then somehow bubbetron talked into giving her a head massage

the migration on both sides was a breeze, no fees, ten minutes for both, aduana a little more involved, they didn't officially open until ten am. we were there at 9 am...now get this...they opened the door, let us into the AC, preprocessed all the paperwork and copies, but could do anything until their system was on, then again no fees, super friendly and real easy, no insurance required, didn't check the bikes out of Columbia, we told them we are coming back and they said OK...central america take notes

so into VZ

a little late but here, destination was Carora, we had to ride thru Maricaibo and this was the first place we hit a gas station, it was packed, everyone in a car and truck told us to go to the front of the line so we did, four bikes all on fumes, all were filled and then we were told...

felix navidad, bien viaje y via con dios - happy christmas, good travels and go with God, a hand shake and we left with free gas...liking VZ already

stopped grabbed some food, then found a hotel for $6 with four beds, looked like something from goldilocks and the three bears, we all laughed when we walked in...hers momma bear (bubbletron) moving to fast, try ing the firmness of all the beds

so as John Downs would say...todays expenses on gas (a 300 mile day) food, border fees and lodging $9.03...beat that John!!!

just got an email, two of the 17 bikes that were in the photo in Cartagena have got into accidents, one was the riders fault and one sounded like a 50/50 where the big adventure bike came out strongest...people riding down here need to give more than double the room and double check every move...i don't want to visit anyone in a hospital, luckily both riders are OK - ride safe and ride aware
