New Smaller Wheels
Well in the interest of saving some $$$ for repairs needed on the house i recently decided to downsize my ever growing fleet of vehicles. I sold one of the project bikes too a friend and have a pending deal on my daily rider. As well i have down sized my Pickup from my 2011 F150 to my new 2012 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab 4x4 Sr5.
I loved my F150 and it was a great truck but it was costing my a small fortune to own and fuel and insure so i took a small hit and traded it on something that would save me a bit in the long run and serve my needs just as well (i never NEEDED the F150 just was addicted by the very fun little Eco Boost). The Tacoma has the 2.7L 4cyl with a 5 speed manual trans. Its a hoot to drive even though its down over 200hp compared to the Ford. Its still plenty capable of hauling the bikes around (still will have two after last one sells) and is a lot easier to get around in the bigger city when i head down. But onto the Pics Day i brought her home ![]() She only had 19kms on the clock when i picked her up ![]() And one of the Beast the Toy is replacing (she will be missed but the roof over my head comes first and the Toy is proofing to be a BUNCH of fun and very practical)

I'll be curious to see the actual highway mpg difference. Ford is touting some big numbers with that twin-turbo 6.

The maths don't seem right to me, but it ain't my wallet. If it were me, I'da sold that F150 and bought me an older one that I don't have to make payments on. ...but that's me. YMMV M

How much fuel could you buy with the hit you took on the trade?

![]() No payments on my 2002 Suburban. The monthly fuel cost is much less than the payment would be on just about any purchase I'd be interested in making...

I still owed $ on the ford so the trade down is actually dropping my payments a HUGE amount per month (i am adding 2 years though). In the long run it be pretty close $$$$$ wise. The Toy though is all i NEED, Its smaller easier to get round, more Fun to drive (the F150 was fun when ya got on the power but if ya did that the fuel disappeared and at $130/tank i could not afford to have fun often). The Toy hauls all the weight i ever need or foresee needing. Its far better on fuel all ready (getting 4mpg better on its FIRST tank than the average on the F150). And in honesty love the look of the little Taco.
So is it really cheeper in long run i dunno but i do know right now its saving me a quite a bit monthly and thats what i NEED to do to get stuff i need done around the house. As for getting an old rig i strongly considered it trust me. I a diesel tech for a lifting dove older stuff for quite some time BUT if i can avoid it i will cause the LAST thing i wana do after fixing stuff all day is to come home and fix my own. Spend enuff of your life pulling wrenches and you learn to HATE IT. Oh and for those curious the Ford F150 with Eco boost in my experience AVERAGED mixed driving with a slightly heavy foot over the 20,000kms i put on it 16.5mpg. My best tank worked out to 18.8mpg and the best i ever seen on a trip on the on dash recorder was 24mpg (seen 31mpg once on a long down hill LOL). Ford made some outrageous fuel milage claims with that eco boost that i just could not seem to get even driving as lightly as i could. IN many cases my older brother got better milage with his truck (identical F150 in blue with the longer bed and a 5.0L v8). It did kinda piss me off but one thing Ford did not mis advertise is the power that little six was POTENT.

ahh.. the 4 square game... you loose the hindsight of what it actually costs to own, and you get stuck justifying the per month cost, versus the total operating cost...

Ask all the guys trading in their 1-2 year old dualies for economy cars and trucks a few years ago when gas spiked! They would have been better off buying a cheap commuter and keeping the truck. ![]() Jim

Compared to a tacoma the F150 is. But i deal with Real trucks for a living as i fix heavy haul stuff and am qualifyed and do drive it on a daily basis. I also in past (prior to my motorcycle obsession) owned and modifyed a 1994 F250 diesel (pre powerstroke) and i called that thing a beast as well (would leave my buddies 03 dodge cummins sitting and his truck was fully done with a banks kit/programer) As for all the talk saying i am an idiot and how much it will cost me. Well honestly i dont care lol. Only i know the true numbers i and KNOW that by doing this swap it has gotten me to a more secure finachial stable point monthly witch is were i need to be to get the work done on the house that i need before winter. Sure i happy i got a new truck yeah i think its a cool new toy and it is a truck i have always liked. So i figured id post pics up on the new toy here since its new and "shiny".
