Nov. 10, 2012 - Long Way Around to Husky Monument

winter came pretty late here in southern california. been high 90's for a while, but the last few days brought rain and colder air and......... yes, desert winter riding finally started....

getting up at 5am and going for a ride is not a bad thing. the ride up is about 90 miles to the town of mojave and the morning temp was below 40F.

first gas up and the obligatory gas price pic. a few weeks ago, they were $.60 more....

the plan was to meet at oro vista in sunland and take angeles forest highway instead of the freeway.

obviously, 6am is not early for these enthusiastic riders

there were small bikes in our group; they did ok on pavement and better in the sand...

it was so cold we were hoping for the sun to warm us up but not in the canyons

riders to my right

to my left

couple of ways to get to the ride area

after 1 1/2 hour - mojave here we are

some of the big bikes are already there

the parking lot starts to get crowded, and it seem many riders favored 1 bike color

one of them guys came from lake tahoe

total of 17 riders, let's ride!....

more coming....

we didn't have any planned route. nowwhat suggested that we follow them, the big bikes.

aqueduct service road, west of hw14 (to the left, it is actually underground and protected from motorist)

here's isaac in front of my camera

he knows the meaning of "reciprocate".....

another gorgeous socal sky

bill's first ride out on his new (to him) wr250

todd had the biggest bike

[IMG][/IMG]

we didn't go as far as jawbone, the group decided that we need to cross the 14 and take the short cut in order to get to randsburg. just follow that road ahead

LOL.... the road was closed.... story here: http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/prog/wil..._tortoise.html

Husky Monument Ride - November 10, 2012

Since I start riding offroad 2 years ago, I've been wanting to see Husky Monument. At last I made it...
Morning was so damn cold that I'm trying to forget about it. Even at 9:30am, it was about 40F at Mike's Road House.
My favorite color was everywhere

Sito is finally back to riding

We hit some sand on out way to Husky, it was quite a work out.

Joel and Rich

Diego

Been there, done that

An other first timer

That's my RR for my first Husky Monument ride. It was a long and cooooolllld day. Not to many pictures this time. And I hope to do it again soon.

Oh btw, now I know how DannyG feels.

Mojave is stuck in a time warp. Grew up there in AV, left there 30 yrs ago, and Mojave has not changed much..

Fond memories of Jawbone Canyon and Bean Canyon, Cal City etc..those were the days! I miss the desert, but not Kommiefornia..

Great ride guys!

hi doc, didn't know your roots were here. mojave hasn't change much, and the ktm dealer went out of business a few years ago.

yeah, the riding areas just getting smaller, that's why i ride when i can.

the desert is always beautiful in winter, prime for riding and no shortage of sand....

jim's bike getting some attention after an epileptic seizure

jon taking the easier line, less sand and whoops

little we know, todd who was leading the ride was also doing his training ride for the upcoming la-barstow-lv ride; he's pointing at the perfect route to randsburg

diego approves

the WRs waiting patiently

riding slow in sand with short legs has consequences

break time....

this place has a good mix of terrain

everyone ready to assist just in case

all did good, and here's bill making it look easy

to be continued.

thanks for reading.

I do miss the sand..here in the Ozarks, if we want sand, we hafta go to Oklahoma!

I am one of the lucky few who got to ride in the aquaduct south of palmdale/little rock before they filled it with water..concrete banked turns with gentle slopes..was fun to book thru there at 70+..just when you get comfortable and in the zone, it would end with a wall of pinstocks jutting down into the earth..good times! Full moon rides, no lights allowed, from Palmdale out to Lake LA..we even found a dirt route from Palmdale to Ventura, before Santa Clarita exploded, even before Magic Mtn..man I could go on..good times!

My dad and sis still live in Lancaster..gf in Q.Hill and many friends there who never left AV..IF, I get back there, I will have the XR with me cause I am needin me a good dose of sand!
