There will be a number of us with that mileage next month.

Just bought a (used) 2012 K1600 GTL. I can't pick it up for 2 weeks and it is driving me crazy.

Last fall, I test rode every sport-tourer I could get my wrist around, and this bike has been squatting in my brain like a parasite ever since.

It's a brain squatter. I couldn't get it out of my head after a test ride.

Moved up recently to a K1600GT from a Fing-GS to get a more sporty day-rider yet comfortable long-distance machine,

The bike is really amazing. I spent a lot of time comparing it to other sport-tourers (sport-ish tourers, really): R1200RT, FJR, ST1300, Trophy. The GT fit me better, has the most amazingly smooth and flexible engine and is a solid allaround package. The RT is great but the vibrations of the boxer motor aren't for me. The ST1300 is nice and reliable, but just wasn't right somehow and no cruise, no ESA, etc. The FJR is the sportiest of those bikes, but wasn't quite right ether - too rough in some spots where the GT is smooth (although it is a GREAT value). The Trophy seems to have too much wind protection for TX, and a cramped seat for my 34" inseam, but has a great motor.

The GT works much better for me than the GTL, particularly with the higher seating position and slight rearset on the pegs. Don't really need the top box either. And I really don't care about chrome

After 1100 miles:

The GOOD:
Torque (6th gear roll-ons from 2500 RPM )
Engine smoothness (= much happier hands)
ESA
"Flip out wings" for more airflow onto the chest area, GREAT above 85F
Bar position about perfect
Rain/Road/Dynamic modes

The BAD:
Heavy in the garage and parking lot (very glad I got it with the "free" engine bars)
Cost (wasn't free)
Bike pulls left (common problem, BMW basically says "they all do that")
Mileage - about 40 on the slab

The "We're not sure where to put this yet"
Easy to hit near-warp speeds unintentionally (hit 95 while clearing a left lane bandit recently - bike was stable, but LEOs were out that day and trying to keep a low profile)
Long-term reliability (as others have noted, lost of negativity on some other forums)
Low-beam headlight (great at night, not that visible during the day. Pretty much all GT/GTLs now come with factory fogs now, which help.)

Hoping to go on my first long trip with the bike around the 4th, TX to MT.

Overall, its a great package. If the cost doesn't turn you off, then its worth a look.

Me too... I almost traded my GSA on the spot. But, I think I'll wait until the GS is paid off and then buy the GT. I just can't bring myself to part with it.

The 1600 keeps haunting me...the wife and I are taking a two hour test ride this Friday. If she likes it, the GS and I may be parting ways. That'll give me a good excuse to get the KTM 990 I always wanted! Bike for her, bike for me. It's a win-win.

I wouldn't consider it the same class as a Goldwing. It will compete more against the ST/FJR sales, IMO.

The GT & GTL are very nice looking bikes. But i`m now waiting on the new RT wet head. But who know`s , in 2 years i`ll see how the GT/L are holding up before i make a switch. Yes i did come from an FJR, wounderfull engine but could get comfortable riding it long distance.

That's probably true. However, the LT isn't being produced anymore so the GT/L the closest (new) competition the GW has.
