Thrust kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.

So, Klay, being the most excellent person he is, helped me cut the umbilical cord and gave me a GPS at CADVR this year, with tracks on it. I can poke around and figure out most things, but he needed the mount, but not the holder with the ball on it. Also, he somehow rigged it so it also corrects my spelling, Klay is amazing. However, I do need the part that clamps to the handlebars and goes around that ball. As elegant as my gorilla tape mounting method is, I would like something more flexible.
I want to buy one but I don't even know what it is called and are the balls a standard size? It will be going on a DR350, if that matters. Once we move past that, I want to find a manual, read it, then come back here and ask more stupid questions.

Thanks guys, I'll start there. You said they did not support it anymore, and I had no idea if that stuff was standard or not. I am assuming you did not rig it so it could help me with my grammar because it didn't have enough memory for that task.

Yes Klay, I do have Google, but what I didn't have, was time to write the model number down before I left this morning.I am not lazy, I just plan poorly.

Those RAM mounts are all standardized. The "not supported" part just means Garmin will no longer provide firmware updates, and I don't think they will even repair them if damaged. The mounting system is not by Garmin.

I have a road GPS, a TOM TOM,(25 year gift from my company) but it is useless off road.

I had it navigate me back to ER, the programming is usually the easy part for me, and I asked a few people some things.
It seems pretty simple, at least with my background.

The Gorilla tape mounting was the apex of my mechanical skills and knowledge of mounting systems though.

Well, that's where I am anyway.
I have been using GPS for quite a while but being (somewhat) set in my ways, I found something that worked and let the world pass me by while I stuck with it.
I am also familiar with those RAM Mounts and consider it a great system, not perhaps the equal of my Tour-a-tech mounts but there again both my Tour-a-techs fit GPS receivers that are "no longer supported".
In search of my next GPS, I had need to expand and adapt my RAM components. I had great luck in dealing with http://www.themountdepot.com, you just have to trust them and be patient if you don't have it shipped special. My order showed up exactly when they said it would despite the USPS having sent an email saying it would be several days sooner (they lied!).

Perhaps I should finally get to the point of this blithering. What you will need to mount the GPS will be:

A "holder", the molded plastic piece that fits your GPS, I believe you mentioned having that.
The holder does not come with (but yours may have) a 1" ram ball (RAM-B-238U) to attach to the back of the holder.
A double socket Arm for 1" balls, They have a number of lengths I have been happy with the shortest one (RAM-B-201U-A) lately although I do have a couple of others.
Finally a 1" ball that attaches to your bike (or boat, car, golf cart....). there is a/are myriad of options. What appears most useful is one of their clamp on bar mounts but it might not be depending on your handlebars/crossbar. There are also 'Hole Mounts' in a couple of sizes where you remove a mirror and re-attach it through the hole of the mount, threaded (male or female) balls with which to design you own mount and steering stem mounts (haven't tried one of them yet).

That should make your options at least as clear as mud. Have fun, don't let the GPS distract your riding, keep the rubber side down!

Thanks Bruce. I am lucky enough to have a Cabella's nearby, where I will be going tonight, with the GPS to get what I need and actually put my grubby little hands on it. Otherwise I would order it online.

I also found out Garmin will recondition this thing for 79 bucks, the little rubber flap is gone over the USB port, and I may be in the rain. I may do so, then save for a new one (the little woman is not too keen on me spending money right now) and pass this on much as Klay did, paying it forward.
