The Red color helps to distinguish the how much dirt is on the filter

that make it a much better filter imo,

Sorry for being a total noob on this filter, but do you oil this up like a dirt bike filter?

Yes. The filter comes pre-oiled for first use. Then you clean it and re-oil. Directions are included.
