Non Intel-based processor

A heads up for Mac folks. Even though your operating system may be listed on the box containing a Garmin GPS, what it will not say is whether or not the GPS will work with the older non-Intel processors, like my G4.
In my case, I can't download Basecamp and I spent almost an hour and a half on the phone with Garmin's "Special Mac Helpers" installing an older version of their map updater that is scheduled to be phased out.
We pay the same price and have fewer features - what a deal.

We pay the same price for the GPS unit. The software is, of course, free.
And I don't think Piratebay allows geezers.

Just curious, what Garmin GPS are you talking about that has computer OS compatibility listed on the box?

Somewhere on the box, in microscopic print, the compatible OS's are usually listed.

To be clear, my point really was that you will not find on any Garmin GPS box that I've seen (certainly haven't seen them all) text that indicates BaseCamp OS compatibility. What you may find on the box (but usually in the Owners Manual or in the online product Spec Sheet) is the GPS's USB Mass Storage compatibility with a particular OS. These are two very different issues which you have unfortunately become familiar with.

There are some really nice Intel-based Mac's on the market these days.

I'm referring to, for instance, a reference to my current operating system, 10.5.8. That was listed on the box for my Nuvi
.
I don't believe Basecamp is an OS but maybe closer to a plug in as it allows waypoints to be transferred from a Mac to a Garmin.
My wish is that before making your purchase you can determine that only Intel based processors will work.
There are lovely Apple Intel-based units available, my GF has an Air that I lust after, but these things are not for someone coping with a second year of unemployment.

BaseCamp is an Application that runs on either Windows or Mac OS's. As you now know it is only supported on Intel-based Mac OS X. I can understand you reluctance to invest in a newer computer. The best way to know what you don't know is to call Garmin and ask before you purchase. Their "on-the-box" and online info can be a bit "incomplete".

Best of luck in your job search.
