Garmin Nuvi for onroad

I have an etrex that has suited me well offroad, but is terrible for the highway (no touch screen, small screen, etc.). Are the Nuvi series decent for onroad navigation? I don't really care about the left hand optimized features of the Zumo, but I am concerned with the visibility during daylight hours. I was thinking about picking up a Nuvi 1490.

Nuvi 550 is an awesome on road GPS. Don't know about the one you mention.
