FWIW my KLX250 subframe looked just like that. Bikes and parts here in Malaysia are big bucks but welding is good and cheap. They ended up taking about 3" of rolled steel that was slightly larger inner diameter than the subframe and grinding it down till it just barely fit and welded it back with that reinforcement in the center. Then they added cantilever type flat pieces of steel under the frame.
I've almost always got a heavy Givi box on the back of my bike and that weld job held up for thousands of miles. Going thru Thailand, Myanmar, Laos on a 6K KM trip that was at least 25% washboardy type off road I weighed the box and it was 17 kg or 37 lbs!

My guess is at most it only added 3 lbs to the subframe... probably less.

Ned has a way of making his points simple, easy to remember. It's short but you should watch it several times; watch the whole thing once then re watch the first section then go out and practice it for several hours.

I went out on a day long back gravel road "adventure" after I swapped the OEM tires with a Moto Z Tractionator IT front and a (110/80-18) Michelin t63 rear- what a HUGE improvement over the factory tires. I was able to negotiate all sorts of shitty back farm roads with WAY more confidence then before. The MotoZ front is about 200% better than the OEM front- no longer was the front tire trying to tuck up underneath me. I should have changed the front tire immediately after getting the bike. Lesson learned! I have done this route before on a KLR650, DR650 and a TTR250. The CRF250L smoked 'em all, easier to ride, way more fun- all around this is my favourite bike yet.

so I went to the dealership today and they had a 2013 CRF 250 L , $4,900 out the door.
then I went across the street to the Yamaha dealership and they had a 2013 WR 250 R, for$8000 out the door. both prices are after tax title license shipping , all that good stuff.
there's just no way that the Yamaha is worth $3000 more . I just can't see it!

You are 100% correct with your assessment. Get the CRF250L, swap out the front sprocket with a 13T and start having fun!

Having both I'd have to say the wrr is worth every extra cent. JMO! You should be able to get the wrr for about 7 otd both prices are High shop around. The crf is a great bike just not anywhere near the bike the wrr is.

you need two M10x1.25x75 bolts and two steel metal sleeves that will cover about 75% of those bolts, drill out the mirrors to the appropriate sizes to put the bolt through, slide the sleeves over the bolts and tighten down.
about half way down this thread you can get a better idea(notice: the wording I used to describe the sleeve in this picture is the "little plastic thingy" which is not correct it is the steel sleeve.

I'd love to pick one of these up, but so far all i've found near me is $ 5400 out the door, title, tags, and taxes included. Will probably wait until winter when the sales guys get hungry.

Well, I hope that works out for you. Two dealers in this area who sell multi-brands, all the CRF's are gone, and they have deeply discounted the Kawi KLX250S's to the tune of $700-$800 off.

Ah yes, the eternal discussion surrounding whether more expensive bikes are better performing than the reasonably priced CRF250L. They very well might be, but even if money were no object I would still go with the CRF250L, it's just so easy to ride!

For me the choice was simple. I got put on a waiting list a few months ago for a crf at msrp. I got tired of waiting and bought a leftover 2012 wr250r for $5675. So it seems to me the price difference isn't so great. I sure would have loved to try the Honda though.
