Well, all the good news is covered, so I'll just bring the bad news.

The 550 and 650 oil pumps are not interchangeable. So that's why there was oil pouring all over the floor in the video. We swapped out the oil pump, cleaned it up and started the motor again. The oil leak was gone, but the starter won't disengage. But that'll be a problem for another day.


In the meantime, here's Allan's pictures of us all working.

Wiring: I made up a diagram for how the bike would end up, but only made a small part of it today; just enough to get the bike running.

It's serious time when someone's fueling up.



The circle of parts:
A couple of years ago I made a simple set of bar risers for Paul for his DRZ that he was racing. He sold the bike at the end of that year but hung on to the risers. About a year ago they ended up on my friend David's GS850. I was going to make up another set for this bike but a week ago he called me up, said that he'd sold the 850 and had kept the risers and would I like them back? Well, that was easy. So there they are, the rectangular lumps between the triple clamp and the bar clamps.

I wouldn't need bar backs on most dirt bikes, but most dirt bikes don't have a 65" wheelbase.

To be blunt, I wasn't expecting a great sound from this bike, it is an I-4 after all. But it's way more 'classic british sports car' than '600cc superbike'.

Or maybe I've been three months in the desert and can't tell Dom Peringon from Boone's Farm.

I think the old SOHC 4's sound much nicer than the newer ones, they thump and growl, instead of whine and scream.

It turns out that the 550 cases don't quite fit the 650 primary shaft. When the two bearings that support the shaft press into the cases they end up too close together and pinch the parts that are riding on the shaft. So I shimmed one of the bearings to give a little more space, and shimmed the bearing retainer. I forgot my camera didn't take any pictures, so Rick took some pictures of the 'dramatic reconstruction' The shim is the first one I made that wasn't quite thick enough and the motor is a spare that I dragged out to figure everything out without disassembling the motor in the bike.


Here's the shaft. It goes into the motor from the left side and through the starter gear, sprag clutch and primary chain sprocket/damper. Those parts are behind the shaft in the picture. The view is up through the oil pan.




Here's where the bearing goes under the clutch cover:



Here I'm holding the shim where it goes in the housing. The two threaded holes in the case to the right of the big bearing hole are where the bearing retainer mounts to, it was shimmed as well.



This is the same shim, showing where it goes relative to the bearing and shaft.


Side note: Ebay motors from hurricane country can be pretty nasty inside.





Anyway, so the jetting is all goofy, but otherwise the bike is good. The transmission works great and the handling feels about right; if anything it steers a little on the quick side. Oh, and the turning radius stinks.

But all in all, woo hoo!
