Motojournalist Peter Egan talk/meet - Black Earth WI

http://www.bepubliclibrary.org/

38 Years of Motor Journalism with Peter Egan - Sunday, April 26, 2015 - 2PM - Black Earth Public Library

Cycle World and Road & Track author, Peter Egan, will discuss his career in motor journalism and share some of his motor travel stories. Peter grew up in Elroy, Wisconsin, graduated from Royall High School in 1966 and attended UW-Madison, where he received a degree in Journalism in 1972, after a leave of two years serving in the Army in Vietnam. He spent the rest of the 70s working as a mechanic at Foreign Car Specialists in Madison, while racing sports cars and motorcycles in his spare time. A series of freelance motorcycle travel articles sold to Cycle World magazine, led to his being hired there as a full-time staffer. So, Peter and his wife Barbara sold their Madison home and moved to California in 1980. Three years later he was hired as Senior Editor at Road & Track, writing road tests, travel stories and a monthly column called "Side Glances." In the mid-80s he also began writing a monthly column for Cycle World called "Leanings," as well as contributing travel and adventure stories to the magazine. In 1990 Peter and Barbara moved back to Wisconsin and bought a rural home south of Stoughton, where Peter had room to build a large heated workshop for his car and motorcycle racing and restoration hobbies--as well as a place to practice with his fairly loud garage band, The Defenders. Peter and Barb also wanted to be near a small airport where they could fly their 1945 Piper Cub. Peter continued to work full time for CW and R&T until his retirement two years ago, through, he still contributes occasional articles to both magazines. He has received numerous writing and photogrpahy awards and currently has six books in print, which are all compilations of his columns and travel stories (and can be checked out from the library!). Two dogs and six cats--all shelter animals rescued by Barb--share the Egan's country home.

P. Egan

This is one of the few times I wished I lived in someplace like Wisconsin, instead of SoCal. I've read most of Egan's books. Where does he find time to do all that? It's all I can do to keep up with two bikes and a house.

Hey Bent - I certainly hope to get over to hear what Egan has to say, but I won't know until that weekend. He's an interesting fella and a very good writer. I always enjoyed his articles.

Yes, the SCR is on the 3rd. Also, there is the John Penton movie at the Barrymore the night before (May 2nd). I won't be at the Crud Run because the Madison M/C is hosting a race (hare scramble) in Adams that day.

I might make that run. I've actually met Peter a couple of times and he's just as friendly and laid back as you would expect.

Good time to pick up some new shoes too

another bump. I'm on the fence at this point based on the 1000x things I'm supposed to be getting done around here that aren't getting done (and the following weekend is SCR and monday the 4th is that new bike night in columbus)..

It looks like I might actually be able to make it out there on Sunday.

Probably shouldn't have tempted fate by saying that...

Peter Egan

About 5-6 years ago, I had my DL650 parked on the main drag through Mineral Point, WI. This was my first ride after spooning on new tires, and I realized that I did not position the brake caliper correctly when re-installing the rear wheel. So I had the rear wheel off and was in the process of re-installing it (correctly this time), when this guy walks up, and starts asking about the bike, then gets down on the ground and helps to get everything back together.

Then my buddy says to the guy, "you look really familiar, are you Peter Egan?" And indeed it was Peter Egan.

He stuck around for a few more minutes to talk motorcycles. Real nice, down to earth guy.
