A Labor Day Weekend Tour

Every year for the last eight or so, my brother, Dan, and his son, Brad, do a week-long ride together. This year, they decided to head to Oregon and invited me to join them for a few days. We met up in Crescent City, Ca. Here are a couple pictures from my ride down the Oregon Coast on Wednesday:

Dan and Brad rode up California Hwy 1 from the Bay Area. Hwy 1 is slow going, and they were a bit late getting into Crescent City. It was a long day for them -- especially for Brad, who started the day in Sacramento.

Thursday morning, we headed out of town on Howland Hill Rd, which was recommended by a few friends. Nicely packed dirt and gravel and beautiful scenery. Nice little road - thanks, OMB and others!

After riding up 199 to Grants Pass...

...we stopped for lunch in Gold Hill.

I'd never ridden up 62 to Crater Lake before, so I was pleasantly suprised by the Rogue River Gorge. We stopped for a look-see and much needed break.

Here's Brad with his R1200RTP (bought for this specific trip) and Dan with his ST1100:

Upon arrival at Crater Lake, we found it very smoky, and views of the lake limited.

But we made up for it with cocktails on the Crater Lake Lodge veranda.

We finshed the day in a Best Western north of La Pine, after being turned away by the Woodsman Country Lodge in Crescent. Seriously. Empty parking lot, no "no bikers" sign, and yet, "we have nothing for you here." They obviously don't care if they lose business.

Friday, we headed generally towards Baker City. We stuck with 26 from Prineville, then off to the north on 7 after lunch in John Day. The smoke had cleared quite a bit and the scenery was spectacular, as usual. We stopped to see the Painted Hills (still waiting on pictures) and in Sumpter to see the gold dredge.

Friday, we headed east to Hells Canyon from Historic Baker City.

That was a very fun 23-mile road up the Idaho side of the canyon to the visitor's center. We then headed back down that 23-mile road and then north on the Wallowa Mountain Road, stopping at the Hells Canyon Overlook.

After lunch in Joseph, we headed west to Elgin. Dan and Brad headed to Pendleton, and I headed south, and ultimately west, to home. From La Grande, I headed to Ukiah and then down 395 to John Day. Some pictures from that stretch:

After spending Saturday night in John Day, I continued down 395 a short way to the Izee-Paulina Hwy and headed west to Prineville. It was COLD. The thermometer on the bike registered 28 F for about 10 miles.

A couple shots from that stretch:

From Prineville, it was a straight shot to Sisters. On the way, some great views of the Three Sisters that, unfortunately, Dan and Brad missed due to the pervasive smoke.

The Old McKenzie Hwy (242) was its usual roller coaster ride. Gonna have to hit it at least one more time before the snows set in...

All in all, a great little trip with great company.
