Suggestions for Atlanta to Outer Banks?

2 GS'ers have a trip coming up and would enjoy not being on the expressway all of the time or none of the time. Anyone have any off the path ideas?

Hwy 158 does cross NC through lots of small towns which is both a benefit and a curse.
