Trip Summary

There were moments during this trip when I asked myself - wtf am I doing out here?
Moments when the ache in my knee and shoulder were my entire existence.

In the end, the good moments were worth the bad.

I met a lot of great people and saw a ton of beautiful scenery.
I was able to completely disconnect from work and the rest of the world.
No tv, computers, email, or newspapers for over a week - nice.
I cheated with the hotel rooms, but the camping nights were the best.

Best Stretch of Road:

Really tough call, but gotta go with highway 3 between Joseph OR and Clarkston WA - awesome.
Honorable mentions go to Crater Lake Loop and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Bypass SW of Bend OR.

Worst Stretch of Road:

Three way tie for different reasons...
1) 395 north between Lakeview OR and Burns OR - 139 miles of NOTHING.
2) 36 east between Chester CA and Susanville CA - This asphalt is in completely crap condition.
3) Entrance to the Dave Matthews CG - due largely to incompetant fascist parking police.

Best Camping: Two nights in Mazama CG at Crater Lake.

Most Interesting Bike: The Harley all the way from Rhode Island.

Best Meal: Ribeye at Madeline's in Redmond OR - made for a good breakfast, too.

Worst Meal: Breakfast at Big Mountain Cafe in Chemult OR - mostly due to condition of the place.

Pix I wish I had taken:

I rode through two active fire zones.
Lassen Volcanic Natl Park was smoldering as I cruised through.
Heading north out of Susanville took me through another hot area.
Charred smoldering ground on both sides of the highway.
Less than a mile from the road were flames jumping some 50 feet in the air.
They had copters trying to douse the hot spot.

Wildlife Spotted:

More deer than you can shake a stick at.
Pelicans on Klamath Lake.
Tons of chipmunks that survived my presence - one, not so lucky.
Eagles, hawks, vultures and all kinds of other birds.
Tom's fish for dinner.
Coyotes that I heard, but did not see, and one that I did see on the flatbed truck.
Imaginary bears
One tame chihuahua.
About a billion bugs on my windscreen, front fairing, boots, and helmet

Thank you for a great ride report. I really liked how vivid the colors were in your photos. Thanks for showing me that you shouldn't let anything stop you from doing what you love.

We never know how much time we have left to do the things we love.

As I mentioned at some point, there's no guarantee I'll be in better condition next year

Gotta go while I can.
All in all, the experience was worth the effort and the good times eclipsed the moments of pain.
I've wanted to see Crater Lake for years - now I can say "been there; done that."

Next?
Time to start working on that idea

Get any more gimpy, and we'll slap a side car on that rig. Then you'll be good to go. Carry a better chair to sit on, a cot to sleep on and a tent you can stand in to get dressed, all good. Like I said before, I may put a side car on that DR650 you pawned off on me. Well, after I clean the carb yet again. With a sidecar, a car camping sized cooler and all the wood you can haul, it will be a good time for all! You could still pull chase car duty in my Tundra or Jeep.

We will not let you off so easily.

Wilting Flower can ride with you in the truck. Yes, the Bitter Little Man is watching this thread too. Wants to do a St Helens trip before the season is out.

St Helens sounds good. I missed that one and Shasta on my volcano tour.
So little time; so many volcanos

Wilting Flower - now that's funny
