Put in about 35-40 miles of trail riding today on my old '97 Polaris 440XC. One thing about a junky old sled, it demands some semblance of confidence on mountain trails... It doesn't do much in great big fields of poweder (not enough power and too short of a track) but I had a frikkin' blast!

Anybody got any ideas why it feels like it's running out of fuel after a solid 10 second full throttle run? It doesn't die, but does feel starved like either the fuel pump isn't keeping up or the pump impulse line is a bit clogged and the carb bowls get low...

Possibly a little lean on the jetting... Get it ripping down the trail and after it starts to do that hit the kill switch, pull the plugs, and see how they look.

p.s.- hoping to do a little maintenance on your old ST over Christmas break- had a blast on it last summer!

That could be a number of things. Fuel pump of keeping up as you mentioned, clogging fuel line, clogged jet, float set too low, or cracked carb boots. Take a close look at the boots, if they are cracked and letting in air you could seize it up.

I wish I had my crappy old sled back. 20 inches on the ground here, all the trails are open.

Bent something in the steering, tweaked some plastics.

Watch out for holes.

Clogged or partially clogged main jet(s). Don't ride it any more until you clean the carbs or you will learn an expensive lesson. Hopefully, your cylinder(s) are not scored up.

Clean your carbs before the start of every season.

I'm sled shopping. :-) looking for a nice trail sled, a friend at work highly recommends the Polaris Indy Classic from the early 2000s so I'm scouring Craigslist. Wish me luck!
