I'm already in the process of using Christmas gift cards on magpul parts.

Hey all,

What do you think of building a gun up from parts? I've been wanting an AR for years but the money always seems to get spent else where. While its hard to save the thousands for a complete gun, I can come up with a couple of hundred here and there.

So where to start? Upper, lower or what? All one brand or mix and match?

Thanks for your help.

Yeah, I'm lookin at MOE stock and MOE+ grip and the xtm rail covers to go on the front except for where I plan to have lights and sling attachments.

The M&P rifles has an expanded trigger guard cast into the reciever already. So I can't customize it, but I don't see why I'd want to change it.

Buy a stripped lower first, most are of the same quality then go from there, If you shop around and are patient you can build a nice mid level AR for less than $500. IMO everbody should have one non tacticool AR meaning no rails, lasers, optics, vfg's, etc. just a basic open sight AR

In November you should have gotten a stripped lower. Then you could have bought the lower build kit and ordered a complete upper. Since Sandy Hook, you are simply SOL. For example, DPMS was in a back order status of 180 days before December. Now everyone who actually manufactures AR rifle components (major portions like lowers and uppers) are back ordered into 2014. You can forget about building a gun for under $600. You'd be lucky to find an upper for less than $800 alone right now because the stupid has been released and is running amuck. You can try looking at gun broker and see what I mean. The local stores in your area are stripped clean of anything AR by now. Go look and you'll see.

Ya, bad time to start a build. That's what I get for procrastinating. I actually have an "insider" who might be able to hook me up, legally of course. I might not be able to pick and choose what I get, so I'll see what he can come up with. It's crazy the way parts have evaporated.

Not to bum you out man, but you picked perhaps the worst moment in the last 20 years to think about building an AR... Normally, you can pick up a lower (stripped) for $120-$150.

Due to the panic that is out there right now, they are pretty much 100% out of stock, everywhere, and guys are selling their hoarded lowers on gunbroker for up to $500.

I picked up an extra lower, as soon as the hint of a ban was in the air, and paid about $50 extra for a multi lower, out the door at $190. That was only a week ago, I could seriously toss it on gunbroker today and someone somewhere would pay $500.

Not trying to bum you out in any way, actually the opposite. I'm saying, don't get freaked out by the prices TODAY, to build an AR. They aren't real, and are panic driven. Of course, there is always the chance they never come back down if a ban is in fact passed. So, who knows...

Got to agree..unfortunately..
If a person really wants one, he just needs to be patient.
A lot of people buy this stuff..just because. When things get a little tight or spring comes and they want that new bike ..that's when you have to be ready to strike.

Should have seen the Fex Drivers face about a hour ago. "Whats in these boxes..Gold?" Ive never seen boxes so small weigh so much!

If a person wanted an AR to use as a platform for some of the various uppers in different calibers, and wanted to start with an M4 type rifle config in 5.56, and wanted it to be as military standard as possible (i.e., parts interchangeability, etc.), *and* wanted something that would accept an upper that could be used for precision shooting - which brand/model would you start with?

I would like to have an AR in 5.56, but would also like something in maybe .300 Blackout, maybe one of the 6/7mm wildcats, maybe even one of the much larger chamberings (.50 BMG).

I looked at the MGI Hydra system and it looked promising, but after googling it a bit came to find out that MGI over-promises and under-delivers, when what I want it the other way around.

I don't want to build from a lower and put together a parts gun, I want a working rifle to start from.
