Although motorcycle sales declined, dual sport sales declined less over recent years, that with bikes like the DR, DRZ, KLR, etc being a significant portion of the dual sport market. The motorcycle companies don't have to update dual sports because they end up having the most consistent sales over time, even without refinements. People see a few at dealers as last year models, but it doesn't mean they don't sell, and they in fact do sell, more consistently than other bike segments. You probably would notice last years dual sport model more so than sport bikes if you're more interested in dual sports. My local dealer always has last year models for sale, regardless of the bike segment. Hell, they still have 2009 sport bikes in 2011 and 2012.
