Newb Needs GPS for Solo Trip

I'm going to do a fly and ride out of Richmond Virginia to New Mexico in a few weeks and was going to use my garmin 300. But it is a battery eater and the KLR 650 I'm buying does not have a plug in. Plus the garmin I have now just doesn't work that well on a motorcycle and with a RAM mount even the screen is very hard to see.

My question is; for around $150 to $200 what GPS would you recommend and mounting system? I want to be able to down load tracks from my friends and follow on the GPS as well as share my routes. Blue tooth and all that jazz is not important. Also may be riding the TAT through Arkansas?

Last question, what software do I need to purchase. I have read through the stickies and talked to a few GPS map guys. Seems like a mixed bag of answers.

Thank you in advance - Ateam
