Thanks. Yeah those bolts are the ones that were holding the skid plate on. I used them because that was all I had. I will be replacing them with grade 8 bolts 3/8" they should hold no problem. They shear strength on them is 8,800lbs. Each.

great I see you are a buncha steps ahead of me . the grade 8 bolts are a great idea, BUT what do they bolt to is my question? I am planning on worm for my DR 650 so any relevant info is great .

heres how I built the sub frame for my XTR..
I bought the front up to connect to the front engine mount,
rear connects to the foot peg bolts and centre stand mount.
The bike is still able to lean... no leading link requred & 3
bolts , 15 mins to remove/install it..
bash plate bolts to the sub frame..

That sub frame looks great! I am going to try to tie into one more motor mount. The bolt I was talking about go into tabs I have welded I the frame for the skid plate mounts. They are pretty beefy

Thanks that makes it alot clearer as to what I have to do . . almost closed a deal on a DT 175 complete for 75 $ but I was the 3rd contestant instead of being caller 1. Ahh well I will keep scouring the used ads and waiting, in the mean time I can get metal connectors and odds and ends. If all else fails I can make my own swingarm and axle mount . I guess all the welding stuff the navy taught me(structural, TIG MIG Aluminum,uphill.) can be used in the outside world...

This is what I came up with for a swing arm.. 32mm X 3mm stainless
steel pipe with 16mm solid bar for the shock mount... 3/4" axle..
Has a 3:1 leverage ratio on the shock....

Ok.....I finally got some work done on the bike. I built my hinge and made some pins. I got the main part of the frame built. I will be adding more to it once I figure out how I want to build the body. I mounted the swinger. I still need to fab up a swing arm brace/fender mount. and The shock mounts. It acts like a leaner right now since I dont have any struts on it yet. I rode it around the house like this................that was creepy feeling! I dont think I would like a leaner. I hope to get some more time to work on it this week.

Its around 9.5 inches. I'm new to this so I did a bit of research and talked to some people with experience and this number seemed to be in the sweet spot. What do you think?

I had 200mm / 8" on mine... And it just wouldn't turn..
I pushed the unit around in tight circles on the lawn &
you could see the car wheel being pushed sideways..
So I changed it to 100mm 4" lead that more than halfed the
side ways push on the car wheel.. And it goes around corners now..
you really need to make the car mounts adjustable so yer can
move the car back and forth to "tune" in...
The rule of thumb is no more than 15% of the bikes wheel base...
The altimate is to have the bike and car wheels in line..but that
has a few weight issue..IE .. car and bike wanting to tip foward..

well, i did some work on the hack today. i'm kinda treading water though. i changed my mind on the mounting system. i did manage to kill 2 birds with one stone. i wanted a wider track width and i also wanted to be able to adjust the toe i got rid of my pipe hinge and went to a more conventional adjustable setup. it added about 5.5" to the track and bow i can adjust the toe. it is also much easier to remove the car from the bike now. i will get some better pictures with my real camera tomorrow.

Well I got my body! Thanks to an awesome member of the AVrider forum(zipper241). My dad was nice enough to let me use his jeep with a cargo tray (and big sunglasses), and ride up to new york with me to pick it up. I will post some better pictures one I set it on the frame. It need some work but it is solid. It came with a seat and a rack. It also has a very nice cover with leather straps. Someone powder coated it without finishing the body work, so I will need to grind some of it off and finish it before I paint it.
