I don't think I'd want an FJR1300 on that ice.

Tip toeing thru there, it's good when you can see it before you're right on it , although bit easier on the 990adv, i still get 'moments' every spring, in similar situation's, haven't dropped it yet, it's coming but

The trick to ride'in black ice, is to head for the gravel. "Normally" you'd ride the car tracks, and avoid the gravely bits, but on the ice, that's where the traction iz. Where I live they use red lava pumice so it's easy too see. That's the good thang 'bout be'in inbred; I don't know no better!

Funny thang 'bout this pic, iz all the fellers with ADV bikes stayed down on the road, and I dun rode the FJR up the hill fer a better view.

Yep. That's what I do given the opportunity. And rather than being stuck out there in the gravel 'tween the cager tracks, I like to be near the edge of the road. Thus, if the gravel in the lane doesn't run all the way across the ice, I can get off the pavement and run on the gravel shoulder where a lot of rocks stick up thru the ice.
Even fresh untrammeled snow at the edge of the pavement and on the shoulder is a whole lot better'n than the packed/iced stuff where the cagers drive. They don't use sand in chicagoland where I am. So I look to ride where the as-yet-to-melt rock salt and the 'marbles' are in snowy/icy conditions.
Nice to see a post from a rider with the same experience in those conditions as me.

Not a lot of choice in this situation. Frozen in the middle, frozen on the edges!
Just ride slow... and hopefully not on an FJR1300, pretty much one twitch and you're down.

Crater Lake, OR last month. Wind gusts cut the visibility in half.
